Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones for a number of reasons including: hormonal changes, loss of tissue, or not getting enough calcium and vitamin D. This disease is a silent disease, meaning that there is no signs of you developing it. The only time you will realize or be concerned about having it, is after you have a bone fracture.The fractures that happen because of this disease happen in your upper arms, spine, pelvis, wrist, ankles, and hips. This disease is most common in elderly people because once you hit a certain age, your bone breaks down faster than your formation in your bone can happen. This disease is more common in women than men because women start to lose bone mass at the age of 35, while men do not start to lose bone mass until they are 65 years old. Since the jaw does not get the blood that it needs, the jaw bone starts to die. This is called osteonecrosis. Symptoms of this disease are loose teeth, numbness/ heaviness of the jaw, exposed bone, gums that do not heal, and pain, swelling, infection of gums and jaw. While there is no treatment for this, if it is cause by this type of medication, the osteonecrosis will usually go away if you stop taking it. This is because the blood flow that goes to the jaw returns to normal.The scholarly journal called “Osteonecrosis of the Jaw in a Patient Receiving Bisphosphonate Therapy” tells a case story about a 66 year old man who received a bisphosphonate therapy for prostate cancer. Later he developed osteonecrosis of the jaw, also called ONJ.
