The main aim of choosing the topic was to research on the relationship between osteoporosis disease and periodontal diseases.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that results into decrease in bone strength and density that finally leads to weak bone prone to fragile. The bones become weak and spongy and are prone to fracture even with slight injury. Periodontal is a condition that affects the gum tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial infection in the teeth causing inflammation in gum. Types of periodontal disease include gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is characterized by red, swollen and gum that easily bleeds, caused by poor oral hygiene. Periodontitis is an advanced gingivitis that goes for a long time without being treated. It is caused by accumulation of plaque on the teeth surface that spread to gum surface. Bacterial plaque releases toxin that cause gum irritation and tooth aching (Bollen, 2006).

Type of osteoporosis includes primary type 1 or postmenopausal osteoporosis and secondary osteoporosis. Type 1 occurs in women who are above 75 years after menopause while secondary osteoporosis can occur at any age, mostly contributed by prolonged use of certain medicine that compresses calcium in bones or as a result of deficiency of calcium in body. Normal bones contain calcium, collagen and protein which make bones strong. Normal bones are strong, do not easily break unless with a major injury. While carrying the research, i experienced challenges in researching the relationship between osteoporosis and periodontal diseases since some information were unclear. The study of relationship between the two disease is still underway and most experiment are done on rats not experimented on human being. However the research was successful and results obtained proved that there is correlation between periodontal disease and osteoporosis disease where both are associated with loss of bone mass density. In conclusion further study is needed in research of relationship between the two diseases and people should be informed on the potential causes of osteoporosis which are potential contributing factor that lead to periodontal disease

There are many different diseases that can affect our skeletal system and Osteoporosis is one of them. Osteoporosis lessens bone strength and bone density (amount of bone mineral in bone tissue), which will lead to fragile bones. It mainly affect the hips, ribs, spine, and wrists. Male or female, at any age, can get this but it is mostly occurs in older women (Team, 2016). Osteoporosis is very common, there are more than 3 million cases a year. There are many causes/risk factors, symptoms, and some treatment cases. About 54 million Americans have Osteoporosis and low bone mass (Foundation, 2016).
Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, is an “inflammation of the gums that leads to multiple dental diseases…caused by infections or by plaque that adheres to the surface of the teeth” (Blake 86). Gingivitis is an “early form of periodontal disease that involves gum swelling, bleeding, and oral pain” (Blake 86). Thus, periodontal disease typically moves from the early stage of gingivitis to more progressive stages, gradually worsening until teeth are potentially lost or separated from the gums or jaw bone. Subsequently, the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems can occur (Nordqvist 1).

Externally osteoporotic bone is shaped like normal bone, however it’s internal appearance differs. Internally the bone becomes porous due to a loss in essential minerals, including phosphate and calcium. Periodontal disease also known as periodontitis is the inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by specific microorganisms resulting in progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with pocket formation, recession, or both. This includes gingivitis, which is the inflammation of the gingiva and is the milder form. This later on progresses to periodontitis and is a more severe form. Periodontitis affects the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum.
