Orlando Florida Shooting Speech By Barack Obama The Orlando Shooting, the tragic event when an ISIS member shot and killed many people at a gay nightclub. A security guard named Omar Mateen, who had pledged allegiance to a terrorist group called ISIS, had entered the night club and opened fired on the people in the club. By the end of the shooting, forty-nine people had lost their lives and fifty-three people were injured. The whole country was shocked and upset about the event that took place on June 12th, 2016. Obama uses fragments in his speech to put emphasis on what the fragments are saying. One of his statements in the speech went, "In the coming hours and days, we 'll learn about the victims of this tragedy. Their names. Their faces. Who they were." He was basically saying that everyone would be remembered. We would remember their names, faces, and who they were. People didn 't know who they were, but they had come to know who they were and were really upset that such a violent guy would kill innocent people. Obama used the fragments to emphasize what we would learn about the victims. It put more emphasis on it than it would have been if it were just listed out. On the news and the Internet, it would tell of the many brave acts that people had done to protect others, but it would also tell how they were killed and what had happened at the moment they were killed or injured. Sometimes the protector wouldn 't make it and so having their story be told is a way to honor their bravery. Sometimes the stories would show how the innocent people are just like ordinary people. He appeals to the audiences mournful emotions by first addressing the people of Newtown, “They lost their lives in a school that could have been any school; in a quiet town full of good and decent people that could be any town in America”. Here, he is not only creating a dramatic effect with the use of a semicolon, he also connects the people of Newtown to the Nation. The picture I chose to go with it also revolves around the Civil Rights movement and is title “I am a man”. This picture shows a large group of African American man holding signs saying “I am a man”. Both JFK’s Speech and the picture “I am a man” utilize the appeals to convince readers of a specific side. For JFK’s Speech he seems to use all three approached to convince us that discrimination is just as cruel and vile as slavery. The association is also used in order to appeal to the audience’s feelings. There was a passenger, Todd Beamer, he was considered a hero and the president uses his image and his wife’s one for the purpose of making the audience feel empathy with the grieving wife. The president says that Al Qaeda “commands them to kill Christians and Jews, (to) kill Americans” and make no distinction among military and civilians, including women and children”, using this he reinforces the feeling of empathy and hatred to Al Qaeda because they have attacked to the vulnerable groups. I would like to address the tragic event that happened in New York City. Last week on March 14 there was a shooting at the 24 Hour Fitness, in New York City, killing 10 innocent people. I would like to apologize to the families and friends of these innocent people that were killed and I guarantee to you all that these people will be missed for sure.
