History of Rap Five men changed the world of music as we know it in the early 1990s. A rap group that went by the name N.W.A. paved the way for the popularity of rap music that has lasted decades. Rap is “a type of popular music of United States Black origin, in which words are recited rapidly and rhythmically over a prerecorded, typically electronic instrumental backing” according to Google Dictionary. This paper will take you through the origin of rap, when rap became popular, and the effect rap has today. Rap has been around for many years and is both loved and hated by people all over the world. It hasn’t slowed down or lost popularity since its rise in the 90s and recently has become more and more popular. A very large amount of songs you hear on the radio nowadays features rap in the song even if it is not a rap song. Rap is all over the place and almost everybody knows of rap music in the world and it may not be their favorite type of music but it is extremely popular. Rap does not seem like it is going to die down anytime soon as many people are pursuing rap careers and creating more and more music for people to hear. There is a large community of people that support rap and love rap and help assure that it will stay around for a very long time. There is also a lot of people that do not support rap and do not like the artists or their music. It is understandable that there is people that do not like rap because it can have a bad influence on some people from the lyrics and real life actions from some of the artists, but there are rappers that go out of their way to help out the world and give back in as many ways possible. One rapper that has made a big difference is Chance the Rapper by donating one million dollars to Chicago schools, and donated money for hurricane Irma relief recently. J Cole donates backpacks and school supplies to children in his hometown of Fayetteville, NC every school year and lets single mothers use his childhood home for free.(Mclaughlin) Many rap artists are great people and do a lot to help people in need. It is sad that they are portrayed as bad people because of the music they write. Rap is a very diverse genre of music full of many different people, and a lot of those people are very generous.
