Preceptor roles are vitally important in the orientation and support for student nurses in the professional nursing setting. The importance of preceptors is that the preceptors help student nurses learn skills, policies and procedures, know protocols, and learn the nursing practice, and become familiar with cultural diversity. The role and effective characteristics of a preceptor is to motivate and lead student nurses in bedside manner, confidence and positivity, and becoming familiar with a healthcare setting. The character of a preceptor is just as important as knowing the role of a preceptor. Character can change learning and teaching styles and create or destroy a learning environment. Characteristics of a preceptor include nurturing student nurses, honesty, leadership, sensitivity, open communication, and being understanding (Henderson et al. 2006). Preceptors are nurses who have passion for nursing and the patients being taken care of and want other nurses to feel and gain that same passion. Preceptors, who are looked to as mentors and role models, need to be extremely supportive because student nurses can be intimidated and quickly realize that what was taught in the classroom is completely different in real time. Preceptors should be evaluated of the teaching given and be willing to change in accordance of how different student nurses learn. A preceptor’s role is to set the foundation of a student nurse’s nursing career that leads to an expert nursing level (Benner, 2013). Preceptor programs have been developed to help nursing shortages and help alleviate the difficulties of a newly hired nurse. A proper learning environment for both the preceptor and student nurse needs to include supportive staff members and supervisors, patience and motivation, and passion from the preceptor. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
Transitioning from academic nursing student to Registered Nurse/New Graduate Nurse (NGN) within the healthcare environment is a challenging task for many NGNs. They may encounter a number of challenges, such as the following: transition shock, professional isolation, lack of clinical experience, stress, lack of a support network and cultural incompetence. At the end, this essay will discuss the rationale for developing my two most important goals for the next twelve months.
The transition from student to a qualified nurse can be a stressful and overwhelming ex-perience for many newly qualified nurses. This opinion is widely upheld throughout the literature with Higgins et al (2010) maintaining that many of the problems experienced are due to lack of support during this initial transition and a period of preceptorship would be invaluable.
My nurse preceptor was Raji. I really enjoyed her communication skills. She made sure to be in constant communication with not only the different healthcare teams, but also the families. Keeping the patients and their families informed really helped get them involved in their care. She had a kind nature and positive attitudes. She made sure to communicate pertinent details regarding the patient's status to the patient's doctors and nurse practitioners. I was really impressed by her effort to provide complete comfort and ease to her patients. I have had previous nurses (at other hospitals) that did not necessarily pay attention to these small patient centered care elements. These were assumed to be done by the clinical partner. However,

Nurses have always been an undervalued asset to the health care industry; however, there is always a great need for them. With more uninsured Americans requiring safe, affordable medical care, the pressing issue of nursing education is not a priority (Aiken, 2011). Recently, there have been modifications taken place toward the current nursing shortage, the decrease of nursing graduates, a workforce that is becoming older, and other factors that influence nurse educator shortage (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). Nurse educators are required to advise students, complete research, and perform committee work all while teaching (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). They also have multiple jobs outside of practicing nursing and teaching. Nurse educators have stressful roles that hold many expectations, yet there is no independence in making their own decisions concerning things. Aiken (2011) suggests that the best way to begin combatting this shortage should include increasing the number of nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from 50% to 80% by 2020 (p. 196). Forty-eight percent of nurse instructors are expected to be aged 55 and older and are predicted to retire by this time. (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011).
In this paper I will discuss how preceptors and educational leaders have contributed to my nursing career and many others. The mentors who have the most influence on nurses are those that stick with the nurses and help give them the motivation they need to move through obstacles. In the first few paragraphs, I will discuss my personal experience with a mentor and the characteristics they possessed that were beneficial to me. Mentors have become a great influence in my career and many others. In the last section of this paper, I will discuss some of my personal experiences in example and support why I value the characteristics by referring back to peer reviewed articles. Preceptors are essential and irreplaceable in the nursing profession and in this paper will describe how they are active in every nurse’s life and profession.
Therefore, I strive every day to be that professional, that health care provider that has a positive and long lasting impact on patient’s health and wellbeing. I always strive to be that professional that my patients and colleagues trust, respect and admire. As a registered nurse, I have accomplished that. I know it because I am asked to precept new nurses and students, because my colleagues come to me frequently to ask me questions when they are in doubt, because when there is a difficult or complicated patient, my supervisor trust me with his care, because at the end of a long busy shift with seven to eight patients under my care, my patients praise me and thank me for the great and unique care I provided them.
It prepares a novice to be able to perform basic skills throughout their career. Learning is related in the classroom by simulation labs and clinical instructors. Educators consider nursing education to be serious. Their role in preparing nursing students is to convey safe practice for patients. They focus on educating students to learn the knowledge of essential care for different patients. New graduates who learn the sufficient knowledge and skills will be able to understand aspects to protect and design for the nurse and patient. Students are taught to recognize safety threats and will understand the significance of reporting errors for future prevention.
As a nursing student I have learned many different things. I have been taught about the different disease processes that occur throughout the body. I have been taught that a patent airway is the top priority in all situations. I have learned a wide array of nursing skills from medication administration to IV insertion, but one thing that I believe cannot be taught and only comes through experience is the acquisition of the characteristics which make a professional nurse. In this paper I will discuss the characteristics that I believe are essential to professional nursing, which of these characteristics I possess, and discuss my role model who exemplifies these characteristics and who lead me to nursing as a career choice.
We as nurses are here to restore health and prevent further health detriments through caring for our patient. While giving care and preventing illness is the central idea of nursing, none of it would be possible without the foundation of knowledge learned in nursing school. A requirement for professional status would be “A profession has a theoretical body of knowledge leading to defined skills, abilities, and norms.” This statement summarizes so much of what I love about nursing. Nurses are constantly throughout the day putting their extensive knowledge to use. This in turn shows how well defined the skills and abilities of a nurse actually are. While a nurse knows a great deal of information, not everything can be done by one person. This is why collaboration, an ANA Standard of Professional Performance, is such an important skill. A nurse needs to be able to collaborate with other health care professionals to provide the best care for a patient. Another ANA Standard of Professional Performance that a nurse needs to utilize is leadership. This journal is a reflection of my experiences and lessons learned thus far within this course. Upon my reflecting, there were lessons that stood out the most. Also, there are nursing practices in my associate’s degree of nursing program (ADN) that correlates with the standard of care that was recently discussed. This reflection also prompt me to consider more in depth the necessary skills and attributes to become a competent nurse.
