Upon reading the chapter, titled Strategy Implementation from the book “How Strategy Works”, written by George H. Tompson, I did not have extensive knowledge of the different aspects of organizational structure and corporate culture. Dr. Tompson’s, approach towards illustrating and explaining the in-depth analysis of organizational and corporate culture made the writing very easy to understand and relate to. Dr. Tompson’s use of a separate introduction that clearly explains what the audience is going to learn allows readers to know what to expect. The learning objectives to: 1) Distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of different organizational structures and; 2) Understand the role of corporate culture in strategy implementation, provide a broad overview of the topics that are going to be discussed. The opening vignette offers a real world example of a company that has mastered organizational structure and corporate culture. Zappos is a highly successful firm that demonstrates the positive effect of a successful organization structure and corporate culture.
Dr. Tompson opens the chapter discussing organizational structure. A story is told about two different organizational structures that manufacture straight pins. One organizational structure allows employees to perform every step of making the pin, although the productivity and consistency are lower and the cost is higher, job satisfaction is increased when the employee is involved in the whole process (integration). The other organizational structure is divided into departments and issued out individual tasks to the workers. This results
in higher productivity and more consistency at a lowered monetary cost and also lowered job satisfaction costs.

...ositive, Dr. Tompson also notes that there are drawbacks to corporate culture. The most noted drawback is the resistance to change. Although some drawbacks may be experienced with corporate culture, it is important to create a culture for employees and customers to connect with.
Dr. Tompson concludes the chapter by explaining the different ways to communicate corporate culture. One that stuck out in particular was the example of Nike using internal branding to communicate culture to employees. Its important not only to brand a company to consumers but also to the employees. Nike’s example of internal branding represents just that.
All in all, this chapter was very well written and explained. I liked the use of real world examples along with figures and tables that clearly explained the different organizational structures. This article receives 10 out of 10 stars.
