On his first day at the job, Robert is experiencing organization socialization. Organization socialization is the process by which a new employee adapts to their new job by learning the roles and norms of the organization. Robert is experiencing organization socialization because his supervisor has assigned Danielle, a coworker, to show Robert the proper ways to accomplish work at Community Services, Inc. Danielle explains to Robert that the organization for whom he work for now works in a very cohesive manner. Danielle is implying that all the group members are very team oriented and very cooperative in their efforts as a whole. Everything appeared to be going well at Robert at his new job, until he experienced intragroup conflict at a clinical team meeting. Intragroup conflict is a disagreement in goals between a person and a group. It appears that Roberts’s proposal is incongruent with his colleagues’ goals. Additionally, his colleagues are suggesting that this proposal is scarcity of resources because they do not have enough time or organizational support to accomplish his proposed goal. Finally, Robert appears to use a conflict managing strategy called accommodation to try and resolve the conflict between his team and him. Accommodation occurs when someone decides to make a sacrifice in order to resolve conflict. Inevitable, Robert finally decided to sacrifice his proposal so that his team can move forward with other efficient plans. Robert believes that this group decision was reached by a democratic decision making process because he was out voted. Evidently, Marilyn is considering this tactic simply so she can immediately jump-in to take Dan’s vacation schedule once he realizes that the assignment is due during his scheduled vacation time. Overall, the most effective short term tactic to use appears to be the exchange tactic because Marilyn would be able to take her vacation during the actual time she wants and wouldn’t have to worry about returning Dan’s favor for a while. However, the most effective long term method appears to be integration; of course, only if Dan successfully accomplishes his assigned task because that would also bring MacKenzie Electronics much more success.
