As a girl in a sorority at the University of Illinois, I people watch like it’s my day job. From busses, to cafeterias, to lecture halls, or even walking to class, observing others is something we all do unconsciously. After ordering Starbucks and waiting for my drink, I began to think to myself why women in the line at Starbucks outnumber men? The thought had never before crossed my mind until I couldn’t walk into Starbucks and wonder about the near absence of men.
If I were to say I liked Starbucks, it would be a huge understatement. I don’t go there that often but I have not had one thing on the menu that I did not enjoy. There is a huge stereotype of starbucks being drinks for the “typical basic rich white girl”. This really bothers me because I don’t see coffee or tea or other beverages in a way that can stereotype women like that. Personally if I’m going to Starbucks it’s to study or enjoy a drink of my choice when I want to treat myself, not to follow a trend or go along with the norm.
