Recommended: Definition and description of the uniform crime report

Crime has always been around in the community. The way crime has been measured and defined has changed over the centuries. The FBI collects data from all the police agencies all over the United States, and puts all the data in the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) which has all the crimes committed for decades; however, a lot of crimes are not always reported, so the Uniform Crime Report may not be as accurate as possible. The Measurement of crime will never be the same as earlier in life because our government, and police agencies has improved over the centuries which will make the measurement of crime not as harsh as it was back in the early 1900’s. The measurement of crime will continue to evolve as our government does.

It states on the webpage Uniform Crime Report, “It has been the starting place for law enforcement executives, students of criminal justice, researchers, members of the media, and the public large seeking information on crime in the nation (UCR).” The Uniform Crime Report is used the most by all these people because it breaks down all the crimes in to categories such as: Race, gender, ethical group, etc. It will also put all the data as a whole. Also it states on the FBI website, “The Federal Bureau of Investigation today released The Measurement of White-Collar Crime Using Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Data, a study in the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) Publication Series. Defined as “... a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation,” white-collar crime extracted from NIBRS data accounts for 4 percent of crime reported (FBI).” This is saying that a white -collar crime such as embezzlement, larceny, and fraud take up four percent of the Uniform Crime Report. Therefore, The Uniform Crime report will further improve its data over time. The Uniform Crime Report is not always as accurate as they make it seem. Police agencies do not always provide the FBI with all the necessary data need for the report, and they sometimes don’t even process the crime committed. Another reason is a lot of victims such as rape do not always come forward because they are too ashamed to do so. In one of the articles it states, “…The FBI requires the police department to include every reported rape in the city as part of an annual Uniform Crime Report, he said. The problem is, the reports don 't show the whole picture, Mendoza said. The annual report may include rapes from victims coming forward about assaults
