School has been in our lives for the longest time and it has always been a positive experience. It sets students on a path to achieve their education goal and stepping stones to a career! Now with all the advancements in life, students have the opportunity to do online classes. This is useful if the pupil is not able to attend school or their school does not offer some classes that they would like to take. Experiencing both of these ways of schooling, I have an understanding of the differences between the two. The major differences between online school and traditional school are the flexibility opportunities, the communication with the teachers, and the time management/discipline from the learner.
Online school and classes have major flexibility in many aspects. For example, a student can accomplish their classes from their own home. It also does not necessarily matter the time of day that the student feels to do their work, so the student can make their own schedule. Along with that schedule, the student can choose the pace of the class so they can learn the material to the best of their ability. Most of the time, a student cannot learn at their own pace of the subject because the teacher has a schedule and other students so that student can easily fall behind or not feel as if they are learning. Also, if a student misses a class due to an illness or some other sort of reason they will get behind in classes, while with online class the student can still work while sick or the class will not move on without them. Some schools do not offer some classes that students wish to take. For example, some schools may not present a language class that the pupil wishes to take but online they have a better chance of being able to take that
However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
Most online colleges allow students to create their own schedules and take courses at their own pace. This has huge implications for students who work full time, are parents and caregivers, or have other obligations. Being able to decide how many courses they will take within one semester and creating a less demanding schedule creates the flexibility that most busy students need in order to be able to successfully juggle multiple responsibilities. Traditional schools have more rigorous academic schedules and more permanent timelines of how many courses should be taken each semester, thus making online colleges more flexible.
One major similarity between taking an online course and taking a face-to-face course is the content being taught. The style of the class does not affect what material is being given to the class. For example, if Brian is taking Algebra 2 online and Matt is taking the same course with the same textbook in a traditional classroom, they are both learning the same things. For this reason, it is a matter of availability and preference that determines whether a student should take a class online or in person. They are getting the same caliber of learning either way so the decision can be based off of personal preference.

By taking an online class, students learn skills like being able to work and learn independently. Students usually work on their online class at home, where there is no teacher and no other students to help them. These skills will prepare them for college, where most of the learning is done outside of class. In college, during class, most Professors do not take the time to individually help each student. Therefore, students must be able to take initiative to figure out, on their own, what they are having trouble with. In a K-12 setting, distance learning or traditional learning requires careful planning that must take place in order for the educational process to work for the students. When we look at both forms of education there are still pros and cons to both. Although online learning has made a major impact in the world of education, many people have not accepted this form of education. One of the reason for their concerns is that students cannot get fast answers to their questions about the assignment from the teacher. Another concern is that the students cannot perform effectively in a group collaboration that is taking place online. Also, students may not effectively do their homework from an online program. Lastly, some families do not have the technology at home for online learning.
Not all students can adapt to virtual learning, as students have to be good readers and the online program may lack the auditory support found in traditional classes. They also must be self-motivated and organized so as to keep track of their work and assignment due dates. Students wishing to take classes that require direct instruction and use of materials not available at home, such as science classes requiring lab work or cooking classes, may have to enroll in classes elsewhere. There has also been some concern “that students who are enrolled full-time in online public schools may suffer from a lack of opportunities for socialization, and consequently may fail to develop important social skills” (Sivin-Kachala & Bialo, 2009, p. 2). There are both pros and cons to virtual learning.
Students have better interactions with teachers in school than they do online. Traditional colleges offer more direct interaction with faculty, which many students find helps them learn more effectively than communicating via computer. Students and teachers get to know one another way better than they would online because they actually talk to each other in person and figure out what each other are actually about. Teachers also can help a student get through a problem by working with them. Like in math class a teacher can talk a student through a problem and show them how to do it. Where online it would be a lot harder to do those kind of things. Students are able to make up test after the deadline and online teachers usually do not allow a students to do that. Also, on online, teachers do not help you with homework. They do not show you how to do anything and if you hand in an assignment late by accident or because you had stuff going on in your life they have no sympathy for you. In school a teacher would have a little bit of leeway and give you a chance to get some credit for the assignment that you did. You are also able to spend time with classmates.
Online education is a booming trend in the education world. It is something different than the traditional classroom. It is allowing student around the world the opportunity to get an education. Online education allows student to have a more proficient and cheaper way of learning. Having multiple ways to give a student an education allows all learning types to find their own way of learning. Education changes lives but it can be difficult for students to get to a classroom to sit through an hour class 4 times a week, this can be for many different reasons. There are many doubts about online education, but this a new world without borders it is a new opportunity for people from all over the world to get an education.

This article made some interesting evaluations; online learning was a big dilemma for me when I decided to go back to school. While I possessed the discipline to attend online, I did however lack the skills needed to maneuver within my course of study. After attending a classroom-based school with some online classes, I made a decision to continue my studies online. The teachers design and interaction meets my level of understanding and when I’m not sure of an assignment, I simply contact them via e-mail. I feel the author did a great job in addressing his chosen topic, showing both the strengths and the weaknesses of his study.
As the economy has changed in the last ten years so has the schools budgets and they are looking for ways to keep costs down. There is much evidence that distance education can be more cost effective than traditional education. Everyone can save a substantial amount of money by going with an online education because schools would not need facilities and equipment. Schools would also save money by not needing to provide services and programs to students. Students would save by not needing to drive to and from school, buy school supplies, and they can earn a degree in half the time than a traditional school setting.
Those who disagree with me think that online learning allows a student to learn at their own pace. Students are able to take the time to understand and figure out problems with the resources that are provided. Education should be one of the most important things in a person’s life. Most people are trying to achieve an education. It is stressful when you are trying to decide what school you want to go to. While debating on whether to attend college or not, many people wonder which education is better online or traditional education. As the cost of education increases a lot of students are choosing online education because its’ flexibility. If you look at it from both point of views you are accomplishing the same thing from both, which is a degree. Some people look at the cost of the school to see if they will go to school there.
