After I finished reading, Online Higher Educations Individualist Fallacy (by Johann N. Neem) I found myself with a bit of mixed emotions. He is basically stating, online education is not the same as oneself physically at college on a campus. Of course, college has its advantages, like surrounding yourself daily with other students eager to learn. My question: Who said every student is there to learn? For example, students going to school only to fulfill the requirements of their parents, students who feel that is their only option, and specifically, the student in class who will not shut their mouth no matter how many times you have asked them to be quiet, they seem to only be there to disrupt and clown. Overall, I believe your college experience …show more content…
Learning, like religion, is a social experience.” Currently, I have a class that I am enrolled in, often I find myself asking “Why I am in this class?” I learn nothing from this lady, her notes are continuously blurry, and every single student is unable to read them. She talks in circles and expects everyone to be able to follow. Personally, I wish I would have taken an online course for this particular class. Everything I have learned in this class has been solely self-taught. To be prepared for the class, I pre-read the chapter we will be having a discussion about in addition to study the curriculum, still I cannot keep up or understand what is coming out of her mouth. I also feel that I am not the only one in class that is completely lost, which makes me feel better about the whole situation. Whereas I am also enrolled in another class, which I adore and value every single minute. This particular class requires an hour and forty-five minutes a day for four days a week. To think this class I feared the most when I enrolled at the beginning of school. Surprisingly now, it is by far my favorite! I have learned so much information in such a little span of time. It is truly remarkable, the change of mind I have had towards this subject! Credit is due to my professor, she is outstanding! Then, of course, I have this class! Comp 1, which as you know is online. There has been struggles, as I think I would have learned better with face to face encounters with my peers and involved discussion with other students and a professor, although I think I have managed to keep my head above the water so far. All- together, with only my brief personal experience given, you cannot say online courses are worse than an in class
During my first few days of sophomore year at Stuyvesant High School, I saw how the ways of thinking were diverse in each of my classes. In my European Literature class, where, in our first reading assignment, we questioned the purpose of education itself. I always went with the flow in my learning, and never stopped to say to myself, “Why am I doing this to myself?”. However, once I read Live and Learn by Louis Menand, I started to think about Menand’s three theories of college and juxtapose each of them to my experience so far in high school. In the end, I concluded that many of my classes followed the main points of Theory 2, which was the theory that I mostly agreed with when I read the article for the first time.
Colleges and universities in the past were limited to one type of student, upper class males, but now colleges and universities are centers of education for people of all backgrounds. People from different backgrounds and opinions congregating at these centers of education, forced many colleges to evolve. By giving colleges and universities a large variety in their students, it forces them to ditch a standard on education. Due to this fact, all colleges and universities must deliver an assortment of options in the effort of giving everyone the best education possible. Evolution for colleges and universities did not end there; due to the birth of the world wide web most colleges and universities now give the option to enroll in online classes. This rise in online education spawned a new form of university, fully online universities. Author Graeme Wood presents in his essay, “Is College Doomed?” a wonderful example of what a college or university should not be. Graeme Wood describes Minerva, an online university with the goal of stripping education to only the essentials. Minerva wants to take away campuses, sports, lectures, and most amenities leaving only their version of education. Minerva’s goal to take away options for students reduces their reach, leaving only a select few with the desire to join Minerva. Limiting students only leads to a worse education, especially since the students are the ones paying for the version of education they desire. College’s most valuable asset is their plethora of options in living, community forming, studying abroad, and variety of classes, this aspect of college in particular is what creates a perfect education for any student.
I learned that I have a control issue and that my OCD gets in the way. I am not going to lie I contemplated several times about quitting online learning. I felt that I was not as smart as others are and when I would not get good feedback, I started to doubt my ability to go on. I am afraid to consult with my instructor for the fact of sounding less intelligent. When you got assignments that did not make sense that was because I was afraid to ask. What I enjoyed most about this class was getting a better understanding of what type of learner I am, and why I do the things I do. I never knew there was even a test that could tell you what type of learner you are. What I would change about this class is nothing. This class made you think about your learning. It did that plus some. My expectations were met because this class had a purpose to show each of us what kind of learners we are. It changed my mindset and it met my expectations
I agree with Gary Gutting in the article “What Is College For?”. I agree that college is a place for students to discover dimensions of knowledge that they would otherwise never know existed without attending. College should not be a place students go to just to pass their classes and earn a degree. I believe that college is about students discovering themselves as people and figuring out what kind of role they play in society. My first semester of college has been rough so far and I now see the reason so many people told me to live on campus. Living at home, I feel that I am not able to fully have a real college experience and make the connections with people I need. I hope to live on campus for a semester next year in hopes of engaging more
It's always great to "get to know" yourself again. From the Learning Style Inventory I have discovered that I am a visual learner. When planning my week, or an event or even a project, it is mandatory that I write it all out on a whiteboard. If I don't visually see it, chances are there are some pieces to the project that may not be completed. It's the same with our online classes, I enjoy the actual lectures. My wife is completing her MBA with Bethel and often listens to her lectures while doing other things. I have to sit down, listen and watch the lecture to better understand. Knowing that I am a visual learner will helps me in every aspect of my life. Even when my family members give me directions to a location, they know not to tell me streets or highways, but rather give me actual
The good thing about Modern College in the 21st Century can manage how and when you take courses. For instance, I am sitting at home doing this paper at my pace and will submit it online. Although I have obligations to tend to at work, school and family, online colleges allow me and others to attend courses regardless of our busy lives. This is a balancing act because everything we do in life needs time and, unfortunately, we just do not have enough of that for everything. Therefore, we must allocate a certain number of hours per day for class work. A study shows that 5,522,194 students attended online courses. However, 14,853,595 students still attended traditional colleges in the fall of 2013. As you can see, there are still an enormous amount of students that prefer in classroom study. The benefits of this type of environment are the face to face interaction students get with the professor and other students. Regardless of your education environment, you still get the benefit of having group discussions and are provided with excellent resources. Nonetheless, continuing your education despite the new methods depends on
said. Campus demographics might be diverse, he said, but people are still there for the same reason. In contrast, he said, unschooling has allowed him to actively seek opportunities to meet people who travel different walks in life.” (thechoice) Everyone has also the same goal in mind which may actually set you back from your goals. That one important goal is that everybody wants to go to college and graduate from it. You meet tons of new people throughout your classes but every single one of them cannot wait till the day they graduate and move onto their future job which is not even promised. College helps people mature individually. It’s the first time people live by themselves in certain cases and you are certainly responsible for your actions. If you don’t do your homework then you will have a bad grade. In
In the beginning of the semester, I thought it would be enjoyable to take Anatomy and Physiology since I had already taken it in high school and actually received a high grade. I had heard from many students that this class is much harder in college and will often have a big lecture setting with more than three-hundred students, but I brushed this off and went into the classroom with a positive attitude. I quickly learned that big lectures were not the classes that I would succeed in, instead I preferred a small classroom setting where I am able to ask questions whenever needed. Throughout the semester, I also learned that I prefer online classes when it comes to mathematics and social sciences because they can be self-taught and I found myself often uninterested during the
For me, College is the portal to self exploration and discovery. Many students are uncertain college is going to help them succeed, which is quite reasonable. As a community college student, it has often been difficult to find stability between my academic journey and social life. I have realized that balancing my priorities can be particularly challenging in the midst of unanticipated chaos that occurs outside the classroom. Moreover, the lack of information, that has resulted from insufficient interaction on campus, causes overwhelming confusion for us. Despite all the
Internet classes are much easier on the student. Internet classes have a self-teach guide that helps them teach themselves. It is not the easiest thing, but they can pass themselves in what they are studying on. Students just do not pay attention in a traditional classroom any more. They get lazy and bored. Which sooner are later leads to failing their classes.A student that excel faster than other students becomes bored. They start doing doodles on their paper in front of them. They do not pay attention to the teacher in class. On an online course they can excel as fast as they want. The student can finish an online course in the matter of months. Instead of sitting in a boring class room. Students that get bored in the classroom seems to lead to dropping grades because of lack of interest.
...and Derar (2010) supports that fifty one percent of online student participants mentioned lack of immediate feedback as a disadvantage of the online classes while a 46 % of them mentioned lack of live interaction as a major difficulty.
In today’s Era, students now have the advantage of choosing to attend a College University or achieve their degree through college online courses. However, some major concerns associated with this major life decision, beginning with the difference in the learning styles. Even though most people would consider taking an online course because it’s flexible to your schedule and students would have additional time to complete the assignment that their giving, other than in traditional classes. To furthering a student’s education, teachers all come together in a classroom with multiple students to learn at a specific time and place. The courses the students are experiencing the teacher comes up with. Going to classes there are rules that students need to abide by. The type of instruction at a traditional school mostly teacher driven. The instructor knowledge in their lectures can have an effect on people to help them learn a lot better than in an online class. The presentation styles that teachers give are very successful in a traditional classroom. When students go to class, some teachers try to make learning fun, and give rewards to keep students coming back for more. Having to do school work online gives students the chance to do their assignments at any time or place, whatever is convenient to their schedule. The schooling online is private, and the type of instruction given a student’s driven. The student basically has to be sure that all their assignments are turned in on time, and read the materials the instructor provides. In my own personal experiences with online classes, I have found out that they are neither difficult, nor easier that traditional classes. The materials covered in online classe...
Mary Kassop, author of “Ten Ways Online Education Matches, or Surpasses, Face-to-Face Learning,” writes, “Can students learn as much and as well online as they do in F2F courses? Not only is the answer to these questions a resounding ‘yes, ’ but there are many ways that online courses may actually surpass traditional F2F classes in quality and rigor”(357). Kassop is a pro advocate of online education and she is correct on the issue because it can provide a good education to many people. Online courses provide a good teaching environment where the individual is on his or her own all in the comfort of their room. The convenience of online courses provide busy individuals a chance to get the equal amount of education as a student going to class and all that is needed to get started is a computer with internet access. One computer can open the gates to a whole new world of learning and excitement.
It’s a necessity for a student in any collegiate institute to gain their desired degree. When being a student of an online institution, it requires students to have a different level of self-discipline then a student of traditional learning. With online education, the student is delivered material from the instructor, and then must take the initiative to learn and understand the material on their own. They are basically independently learning and not getting any direct help from their peers or professor. This can be challenging for a student who lacks motivation or concept to learn independently. With a lack of motivation, many students fall behind in their work, often becoming discouraged and eventually ponders the possibility to dropping out. Many students work better in an environment that requires them to go to class. Traditional learning calls for a student to be prepared before class. When they arrive to class the information is reiterated for better understanding and possibly for class discussion purposes. After which, students are given post-assignments for further training on the content. This creates a physical routine for the student to follow and also create the feeling of accountability. Most students need structure in order to be a successful student because it gives students the necessary support to complete assignments and tasks on a daily
My mother felt like I wouldn’t be successful because I wouldn’t be on a professors schedule and there would be no help. I can understand what my mother was trying to say because some of my professor doesn’t answer right away so I can’t do a lot on my own and outside help. I just can’t attend face to face classes because of my work schedule so I had to adapt. I don’t understand why I need to sit in a face to face class because most of my work is online anyways so it’s a waste of time to drive to class and listen to the professor teach what I can read for myself. I agree that online classes are more effective than face to face classes for me but I can understand how it may not be to others. Every student learn
