Olaudah Equiano was taken captive at the early age of 11. He did not fall in the age range that prospective slaves were taken.

At the beginning of the Atlantic Slave Trade Africans sold their enslaved rivals who lived near the coast, but due to the amount of slaves that the colonies in the Americas required was increasing the African slave traders in Africa had to go further inland to get the slave to meet the demand of both the foreign and internal demand of slaves, although focusing more on the foreign. As the Europeans had to import more slaves, this is more true to the Spanish, Portuguese and Caribbean colonies. The striking difference between tight packing and loose packing was that ships that did loose packing boarded fewer slaves than the maximum capacity of their ships. The benefits to slavers would be that the slaves had a lesser chance of becoming ill, therefore less likely to die while en route to their destination. This also meant that they would have lesser profits since they did not bring that many slaves with them. F or those that did tight packing it meant that they were able to bring huge amounts of slaves, more than twice their maximum capacity, this meant that they would garner more profits in one trip. But in tight packing slaves had a much higher rate of becoming sick and ill, and thus a great amount of them would die in the process of just getting to the Americas.
