ntroduction There’s an estimated three and a half thousand oil platforms that spread throughout the central planning area in the Gulf of Mexico with the majority of them no further than 50 miles away from the shores of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Across the shorelines is home to the wetlands, a paradise ecosystem for many species that live there. Much of it is inaccessible and untouched from human activity. In 2010 an event that caught the attention of almost everyone occurred. An explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oilrig that caused a huge oil leak producing devastating effects caused by a simple mistake that should not of happened in the first place. Because of this, several consequence’s had occurred from it and many research investigations had gone underway to find out why it happened, what the oil company did about it and what should have been done to prevent the oil spill. Background Information: The Gulf of Mexico has approximately 3540 miles of coastline spanning from Florida, USA to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. According to Gore (1992) America covers approximately 1631 miles of the Gulf of Mexico coastline and there are 5 American states that border the Gulf and they are Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The accumulative population of these 5 states in 2010 was approximately 56,227,000 (United States. Census Bureau, 2010) With the area of 9,826,675 sq. km the United States of America is the 3rd biggest country in the world with an estimated population of 316,668,567. On average it has an increase of 2.8million people per year, which is a population growth of 0.9%. Failures to recognize or ignore faulty or broken machinery to save money or time or even to make the job easier can easily accumulate and start a whole chain reaction of problems. The efforts from BP in attempt to fix the well and their lack of options they had available to create a block was really poor and for that scale of a leak there should have been a much better reaction in order to seal the well much sooner in attempt to save the environment. BP’s main focus should now be putting money into research to minimize the possibilities of this happening again by creating a definite fix that’s quick and easy to apply if this were to happen again, Efforts should be made into training the workers to be able to deal with the situations better.
