ntroduction There’s an estimated three and a half thousand oil platforms that spread throughout the central planning area in the Gulf of Mexico with the majority of them no further than 50 miles away from the shores of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Across the shorelines is home to the wetlands, a paradise ecosystem for many species that live there. Much of it is inaccessible and untouched from human activity. In 2010 an event that caught the attention of almost everyone occurred. An explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oilrig that caused a huge oil leak producing devastating effects caused by a simple mistake that should not of happened in the first place. Because of this, several consequence’s had occurred from it and many research investigations had gone underway to find out why it happened, what the oil company did about it and what should have been done to prevent the oil spill. Background Information: The Gulf of Mexico has approximately 3540 miles of coastline spanning from Florida, USA to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. According to Gore (1992) America covers approximately 1631 miles of the Gulf of Mexico coastline and there are 5 American states that border the Gulf and they are Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The accumulative population of these 5 states in 2010 was approximately 56,227,000 (United States. Census Bureau, 2010) With the area of 9,826,675 sq. km the United States of America is the 3rd biggest country in the world with an estimated population of 316,668,567. On average it has an increase of 2.8million people per year, which is a population growth of 0.9%. The purpose of this research paper was to investigate the news media’s depiction of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The coverage provided by the newspapers was compared to that of scientific journals to access their validity and insight. The reactions the coverage evoked on the public were also studied. The paper specifically addressed the media’s portrayal of the oil company versus that of environmental groups. It was found that the news media did not include the benefits the oil company had had on the people and economy of Alaska. It was also found that up until 1989, many Alaskans were opposed to environmental groups. Next, the paper followed the role the media played on the public’s emotions and subsequent government policy. In addition, the use of exaggerated statistics in the wake of the spill are examined and corrected. Finally, the debate over the recovery of the area is tackled. And while the debate remains open, the apparent discrepancies in data are discussed.
The BP oil spill began with the explosion of the mobile offshore drilling unit known as the Deepwater Horizon, then operating in the Macondo Prospect Oil Field some 60 kilometers off the coast of the U.S. state of Louisiana, on April 29, 2010. British Petroleum deepwater Horizon oil rig cracked from three places and raw oil leaking into the sea. .it was considered that over 60,000 barrels of oil a day are mixing with Gulf water and Oil spread over 70 miles to 130 miles into the sea and can be seen from space.
In my opinion, BP's response to the oil spill wasn't the best. Plus their spokesperson Tony Hayward's comments did little to help the situation. The response should have been about damage limitations. Hayward's responses made the company seem aloof and unconcerend about the environmental damage being done. When they gave an amout of barrels that were leaking into the ocean, they gave the wrong amount which hurted their credibility. They deflected the blame for the accident. BP would call the oil spill the "Gulf of Mexico oil spill" while the rest of the world called it the "BP oil spill." They might have took the blame but they said it wasn't their accident however they would take responsibility to clean it up even though it wasn't their fault. I think the fact that they used social media to show show updates and progress was a smart move since it is probably now the biggest media median. However, everything else was not the best way to handle this whole situation.

British Petroleum (“BP”) is the company that is being blamed for the incident. Employing 80,000 people, BP is an international oil company that puts different technology to use for finding oil and gas under the Earth’s surface. One of the oilrigs, Deepwater Horizon has drilled 35,000 ft. making it to be the deepest drilling of oil and gas (Walsh). Deepwater Horizon was drilling in the Gulf of Mexico about 52 miles southeast of Venice on Louisiana's tip. After the explosion, helicopters searched for 11 crewmembers that reported missing. 17 people were injured (BP Internal Investigation Team). A day later, the rig was found upside down (BP Oil Spill Timeline). The cost to clean up the damage is approximately $760 million (Walsh).

These two oil spills were both disasters and had greater effects in certain categories. On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, located in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded, killing 11 workers and injuring 17. The oil rig sank a day and a half later. The spill was referred to as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, BP oil spill, Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and BP oil disaster. It was first said that little oil had actually leaked into the ocean, but a little over a month later the estimate was 12,000-19,000 barrels of crude oil being leaked per day. Many attempts were made to stop the leak but all failed until they capped the leak on July 15, 2010, and on September 19 the federal government declared the well “effectively dead.”
