Recommended: PROBLEM OF VIOLENCE IN SCHOOL

The day was dark and dreary. There were two men talking, having a peaceful conversation by the river. Birds were flying above the skies calling out a cry of sadness. The short man was telling a story of a beautiful dream. The dream consisted of a dream that they would have some day: rabbits and a farm and “living’ off the fatta the land”. The big man smiled and looked at the mountains listening and dreaming of that fantasy. He knew it was going to come true some day. Then, all of a sudden, the short man pulls out a gun and shoots his best friend in the back of the head. What kind of violence do schools want to teach their students? By just showing the mere part of shooting a person, it also spreads the notion of doing the same action. After this horrendous incident, the men took the short man out to drink beer. Is this a cause of celebration? These contents should be protected from exposing to teenagers. Of Mice and Men also shows overuse of offensive language and ethnic segregation. Therefore, Of Mice and Men should be banned. A part of this book dedicates a chapter to show the stereotypical situation in the 1930s. Crooks is the main part of this chapter of the book and it shows how he reacts when a white man comes into the room and other situations. This book may show some stereotypical situation in the south as educational, but it may expose and offend a certain group of people. Furthermore, when naïve read this book, they may not be capable of knowing how to react to this book and call discriminating names to their fellow peers. School districts need to realize that some, if not most of the students reading this would have their ethnic background offended in some way. Another part of the book shows the theme of friendship as a very positive idea. This includes George and Lennie, who are the best of friends and come to work together on the ranch. However, it doesn't end so happily when George ends up shooting and killing Lennie Even though this book has some optimistic values of friendship, it also ends up destructive and can give abnormal ideas to unexposed teens. These ideas can sometimes be harmful, especially coming from a novel. The degradation of woman sets the tone of inequality.

George and Lennie were lifelong friends and had varying personalities even from the start. Lennie thought about how his Aunt Clara said he should have been more like George. At the time when the story took place, the two men were travelling together, and had been for some time, working and then moving on to search for the next job they could find. They were like many other men in search for work, except it was rare for men to travel together. George felt a need to take care of Lennie because he was somewhat slow. George was an average man of the time. He was a good size, nice, but firm, and he had aspirations to be more than just a nomadic laborer. Lennie, on the other hand, had always been a little different. He was big, goofy, clumsy, but sweet. They were also both good workers. George was concerned with working and getting his money before they got into trouble and had to leave camp. Lennie was the one who normally started the trouble. He was a hard worker and lived to appease George, but he got distracted easily which angered George. George told about how they would own a house and a farm together and work for themselves. Lennie loved to hear the story and think about the possibilities, even though nobody knew if any of it was a possibility. George and Lennie's differences in part led to George's inclination to kill Lennie. Despite their dissimilarity, the two men needed each other probably more than they realized.

As the story continues on and the pair arrive at their job, the character chart begins to branch as we are introduced to Slim, another worker on the farm. After learning of the two’s past together, he openly expresses, “Ain’t many guys travel around together... I don’t know why. Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other” (Steinbeck 35). There is a unique value to George and Lennie’s relationship which the world lacks. Rather than combining their might, people would rather watch their own back with one set of eyes than having a second set to keep watch. There is mistrust between people and the idea of backstabbing and swindling is very present due to the economic decline and the loss of wealth for all social classes. Life is not a bed of roses. People use this expression to stress the fact that there are and will be difficulties in life. John Steinbeck, in his novella Of Mice and Men, does not fall short of the same views. It takes place in the year 1937, a period associated with the Great Depression, and illustrates the hardships of the time, and more so those that laborers such as George and Lennie experience. Life proves to be full of disappointments for both men who are victims of harsh circumstances in more ways than one. The two have a dream to own a farm of their own but circumstance and fate robs them of their dream for a better life. This is a depiction of the lost American Dream during the Great Depression which lasts between 1929 up to the 1940s. The poem titled “This Is Not The Life” further depicts the hardships found in life. It clearly portrays the uncertainty and struggle associated with living during the Great Depression. Thus, both the novella and the poem explain that human dreams for a great future are subject to circumstance and fate, which most of the time collude against human success in life leaving only a trace of broken dreams, pain and misery.
