In a modern world such as ours, it is sometimes difficult to understand special customs that were most highly respected in ancient cultures. However, some have been able to adapt with the times and transform into decorum that can be still valued today. Xenia can be a perfect example. Coming from the ancient Greeks, xenia was the religious and civic commitment of hospitality that was expected of all guests of people as well as from the hosts themselves. The ancient Greeks held xenia in the highest regard and believed in great consequences if the rules of xenia were abused in any way. Xenia, to them, was much more than guidelines for them to follow; it was a duty that required utmost regard.
The ancient Greeks believed that there were exact rules of xenia that needed to be carried out in order for it to be valid. The requirements of the guest included that the guest must do no harm to the host; they must not steal; they must not rape, seduce, or sleep with their host’s wife, daughters, and servants or slaves; and they must not overstay their welcome at the host’s residence. In turn, the host must provide food, drink, a clean set of clothes, a washing of hands, feet or a bath, and a safe place to sleep; they must do no harm to their guest; and they must not question the guest of their name or business until all the before stated requirements were fulfilled. One straightforward example of proper xenia is when Telémakhos and Nestor’s son pay a visit to Meneláos while on a quest to find news of Odysseus. ...o the complex tale of Odysseus’ adventures are underlying themes of Greek ethics, one of the most prominent being xenia. While the epic teaches many things of the gods and of Greek culture, xenia appears again and again and seems the most pronounced. Xenia was expected not just in the epic itself, but in the daily lives of real ancient Greeks. The extreme hospitality and courtesy that was customary for the Greeks to show to their guests or hosts can also be a loose model to modern day civilization, where common civility is often neglected to be shown. In a world full of prejudice, arrogance, and animosity between people of different parties, xenia should be a most welcome idea of behavior, albeit one that should be altered to fit in with the new world.

From the very beginning we can see the Powerful Kirke showing good xenia by the way she treats her guests, it is the way he does it that makes us question whether it is slightly wrong. “On thrones she seated them…she prepared a meal of cheese and barley and amber honey mixed with pramanian wine…” (Pg. 172 lines 257-259) Although this shows nothing but good xenia she adds her own evil spice to the feast, “…adding her own pinch, to make them lose desire or thought of our dear father land.” She betrays them, uses their weakness to her advantage and turns them into swine. Once Odysseus hears about this he rushes to stop this trickery, while on the way the great Hermes prepares him with an herb that will stop the powerful effects of Kirke’s evil trance. Odysseus arrives with a clear mind and even though Kirke works hard to put him under her trance, she fails time and time again. Odysseus loses track of his long term goal to go home and ends up staying over a year willingly drinking wine and eating luxurious meat. When he finally realizes it is time to get back on plan and head home. A sneaky Kirke has other plans for Odysseus and his crew’s journey, “…you shall not stay here longer against your will, but home you may not go unless you take strange way…come to the cold homes of Death and pale Persephone.”
The story is based around Odysseus’s journey around an unknown world. He develops the most guest-host relationships in the story based on the fact that on many occasions he must ask strangers for provisions in order for his journey to continue. “A grave housekeeper brought in the bread and served it to him adding many good things to it, generous with her provisions.”(Homer, Book 7) These provisions were needed in order for his journey home to continue. Hospitality or Xenia (Greek for guest-friendship) is a prevalent theme used throughout the Odyssey and helps the readers understand more about Greek culture in the Bronze Age. However in that time it was more like Philoxenia (Extending hospitality to one far from his home). Homer used hospitality to define his characters and shows how it affects them. He introduces their cunning personality traits and ignorance through hospitality. He demonstrates how it affects the gods, and odysseus’s journey, and uses literary elements to do so.
Understanding a story requires more than just reading words and matching them with a general definition. One needs the ability to comprehend the themes by carefully reading between the lines. The concept of xenia is displayed numerous times throughout The Odyssey. Xenia is a type of hospitality that many of the Greeks found necessary to abide by. As Carly said in her description of xenia, it "describes guest-friendship as a sort of custom of the home." In order to fully grasp the idea of the book, one must understand this Greek hospitality and the significance it served to many Greeks during this era. If there were an absence of xenia, The Odyssey would not have any cultural depth to it; instead, it would be a book solely about a war hero who experiences few obstacles on his way home. Xenia, or the concept of hospitality, is the main theme present in the Odyssey. In the poem, Odysseus is trying to get back to his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus. This tale coincides with the times in Greece. This was a time that art and Philosophy were extremely important and respected by the people. Odysseus was a new type of hero that didn’t win by overpowering his opponents, but by using his mind to outwit them. Honor or having an honor culture is a hallmark trait of many cultures both ancient and modern. While many would go to Homer’s The Iliad for clear indications of honor culture within Ancient Greek culture, The Odyssey also provides clear indications of an honor culture. Before honor culture within The Odyssey can be explored, honor and honor culture must first be defined. The most common and relatable explanation for honor culture in our modern day world is a prevailing culture in the southern United States of America especially within the Appalachian communities. This culture and the Ancient Greek culture share simple hallmarks. Honor culture is about neither committing transgressions against another, nor tolerating them when they are done to you. It is about the value of your “good name” and reputation for being honorable. This means that slights not only against you but against your name are taken very seriously. These things are generally held throughout all cultures of honor. Some of the specifics of honor are defined by each individual culture; these specifics along with the general state of an honor culture are shown in three events within The Odyssey. The culture of honor is shown in through Odysseus in his encounter with the Cyclops, the exchange with the Phaeacian man at the games, and in the slaughter of the suitors.
The Odyssey is a Greek word meaning 'the tale of Odysseus.'; Odysseus, the King of Ithaca; husband of Penelope; father of Telemachus; and son of Laertes was not able to return home after the war he was once in: the Trojan War. Stuck on an island, he is presumed dead. In his absence, suitors for his wife ruin his house with lavish feasts. This epic poem, by Homer, describes how Odysseus, with the help of the gods, gets home and regains his kingship. Justice is always harsh in the Odyssey; there is either no justice or a lot of it; the punishment however, is always severe. Justice in the Odyssey plays out among these characters: Odysseus and his crew, the suitors, Poseidon, Aeolus, Hyperion, Agamemnon, Aegisthus, Melanthius, Melantho, Telemachus, and Polyphemus. Each one of these characters does something wrong and receives a harsh punishment. In the Odyssey, justice, when done, always allots a large punishment, never a small one. Aegisthus courted Agamemnon's wife and then killed him. The justice of the Gods is a swift and powerful one. However, Aegisthus had been warned: 'we ourselves had sent Hermes, the keen-eyed Giant-slayer, to warn him neither to kill the man nor to court his wife'; (pg. 4). Aegisthus ignored the warning, killing Agamemnon and courting his wife. Orestes, Agamemnon's son, killed Aegisthus to avenge his father's death. The gods saw this as swift, fair, and powerful justice: 'And now Aegisthus has paid the final price for all his sins'; (pg.
Homer’s poem The Odyssey depicts the tendency of people to ignore the consequences of their actions. Odysseus punished Penelope’s suitors without thinking of consequences that he would have to endure. He did not acknowledge the consequences because that would prevent him from doing what he wants to do. Odysseus wanted to kill the suitors; they ate away at his fortune. Finding consequences for murdering the suitors would force Odysseus to realize what he is about to do is not a good idea. Odysseus chose to ignore the consequences and killed the suitors anyway. Odysseus had absolutely no reason to kill the suitors; they had the right to stay in his home because Penelope made them feel welcome, Penelope and Telemachus both told them that Odysseus was dead, and although Telemachus told them to leave, he did not have the right to do so.
Since Poseidon, god of the earthquake, is still furious toward Odysseus for stabbing Polyphemus in the eye, the Phaeacians’s xenia went wrong. They hosted their guest properly, but went against the gods’ will and in a way showed no respect to the gods, especially Poseidon. After Poseidon knew Odysseus went back to Ithaca, he said, “I will lose all my honor now among the immortals, now there are mortal men who show me no respect – Phaeacians, too.” (13. 145-147) Thus, the Phaeacians were punished and killed for showing xenia to the wrong

The Odyssey details Odysseus’ arduous return to his homeland. Ten years have passed since the end of the Trojan war and Odysseus, the “most cursed man alive”, has been missing and presumed dead by many. (10.79). Throughout the novel, gods play a significant role in the fate of Odysseus and other characters. The extent of the gods’ role though is not unqualified, contrary to Telemachus’ suggestion that, “Zeus is to blame./He deals to each and every/ laborer on this earth whatever doom he pleases” (1.401-403). While Zeus does have this power, his description of how humans meet their fate is more accurately depicted throughout the novel. As he aptly points out, “from us alone, the say, come all their miseries, yes,/ but they themselves, with their own reckless ways,/ compound their pain beyond their proper share” (1.38-52). While the gods do doom certain mortals, many of these mortals exacerbate their ill fate by making rash decisions and ignoring the gods’ warnings. The gods are also not always disrupting mortals lives; they often aid mortals in need. In fact, mortals who effectively court the favor of the gods often benefit greatly. While the gods’ powers are unquestionable, no one god’s power is insurmountable. Gods can be outsmarted and their wrath escaped. The Odyssey, in congruence with Zeus’ statement, ultimately, portrays human freedom as existent, but limited.

How one disregards the rules of hospitality, and does it knowingly, is how the suitors behaved. Throughout the Odyssey, Homer writes about many different instances of good hospitality, like the people of Pylos. Homer also shows instances of bad hospitality, like how the suitors behave as guests and how Polyphemos treats his guests. No matter if it is a good or bad example of hospitality, the impression of how important xenia is to the Greeks is always present. All of the Greeks follow the rules of hospitality to the nines, for fear that they will be struck by Zeus’s lightning bolt.
