Firstly, it is indispensable to explain the meaning of segregation. There is a collective trend to relate the level of segregation as a measure of gender inequality, but this is not essentially true. In fact, the overall level of segregation is a combination of vertical and horizontal segregation.
Around 1979, Hakim introduced the idea of vertical and horizontal segregations with the aim to better explain the meaning of segregation. In his model, “The components of segregation”, he identified three dimensions: the vertical, the horizontal and the overall segregation.
Hakim (1979), explained that the vertical segregation measure the factor of inequality within all occupations, and that the horizontal segregation tries to explain the extent of the occupational differences without any element of inequality. Finally, yet importantly, he adds that the overall segregation is the combination of both, vertical and horizontal segregation, and he explains that both are extremely important to understand segregation. If the explanation was based just on inequality, it would be incomplete because it will miss part of the meaning and the understanding will be misleading.

This essay looked at Gendered Occupational Segregation in the UK through different lenses and it was possible to elucidate that theories such as the Patriarchy approach, the Human Capital theory and the Feminist perspective can help understand the reasons why segregation exists and is still happening.
Nevertheless, this essay also illustrated that the trend is changing and that although a big number of women still choose part-time jobs and low paid jobs, an increasing number of women are investing on their studies and climbing up the ladder to higher job positions.
It was made clear that the labour market is still highly dominated by men, that women are still paid less than men, but that women are increasingly breaking this trend.
