Employers have a number of responsibilities to their employees at the work place. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration has helped to develop laws that list a number of responsibilities that the employers have toward their employees. Besides the laws that have been developed by the Federal and State governments there is also an ethical obligation for employers to provide a safe workspace for their employees. To help create this safe work space employers routinely conduct back ground checks during the recruitment and hiring process. This is a preventative measure by the employer. . “In quite limited circumstances a municipality will be held liable for its employees ' constitutional wrongs on the basis that the city failed to adequately screen the employees before hiring them.” (Achtenberg, 2005). Employers are able to use the results in a background check to determine whether or not to employ an applicant, as well as, whether or not to terminate an employee. Employers have an ethical obligation to keep their employees safe, and to make every effort to ensure that they have created a work place that is as free from risks as possible. Other preventative measures that can be taken by employers include monitoring the use of social media on the company’s computers, monitoring work email accounts, and encouraging all employees to report acts of misconduct or harassment. It is important for organizations to develop a culture which promotes and encourages positive conflict resolution. “All behavior occurs within a social context and within organizations that context is the culture of the organization.” (Bowen, 2011).

Employers have a legal and ethical obligation to take preventative steps, as well as, corrective action to protect all employees, customers, and the community it serves. If the employer is aware of potential risks to any of these groups of people it is necessary to take steps to remedy the situation and this may include retraining a staff member who may be unaware of his or her actions posing a risk, as well as, terminating employment of those who either pose a great risk or demonstrate a reluctance to changing. All employers have a legal and ethical responsibility to hire and retain people who demonstrate a desire to conduct themselves with regard for others. And if they fail to do so employers maybe and can be held responsible for any acts of violence or violations committed by their employees.
