Observation
The act of observation is a very important way of doing social research. It is a natural way of observing people in the public or any environmental setting without interrupting their activities. The data and facts created through the eyes of participant observation are qualitative and reliable. I was asked to conduct the observation in two public places and here are the findings of my observations. People are not aware and conscious about being observed in public which also add to collect facts accurately.

Though it was completely different place from mall but environment was very similar. There was also a separate playground for children as well as there was a place for people to do exercise. As in mall, you could also see lot of children and parents in Public Park too. I saw a couple walking in the park with their dog. The dog was barking at the stranger. Most of the children got scared by seeing the dog. Actually it was a bull dog, very giant and scary look. I saw children being dressed up according to their gender identity. All the boy children were dressed up in blue whereas girls were dressed up in pink. Boys and girls were not playing together rather they were forming their own group. There was one particular girl dressed up in all pink. What made her different from other children was that she had a large Barbie doll with her. She looked like a four years old kid but was very active and interacting with her doll as if the doll was a human being. She was playing a role of a mother and doll was her daughter. She pretended to change doll’s diaper as mother does for her baby. She even holds the baby on her lap and trying to feed bottle milk. Her mother was sitting next to her reading a book. The book she was holding in her hand was fifty shades of grey. I could see her facial expression while she was reading the book. She kept on touching her hair with her hand every now and then while
During this assignment, I needed to observe infant/toddler from birth to 36 months. The observation was for 30 minutes while the infants interact with the world. While the observation, I created a running record observation to keep track of the developmental domains. The observation took place in the ECE classroom. There were three children which were Charlotte, Loui, and Benjamin. They were placed in the center of the class where there was different kinds of toys. During the observation, Charlotte and Loui were interacting with one another. However, Benjamin wasn’t interacting at all. Loui interacted with classmates and went outside the circle to get some toys.
To conclude child observation is a method to understand the child’s world, how they react within their environment. I found it really useful to learn about the child’s development, thoughts, focus on feelings and at different ages the child goes on developing his/her capacities. Every single context can change what the observer sees because a child can have different reactions in front of his/her parents and in front of a carer. Social workers learn from the experiences and reflect within their own practice. It is an important technique for social workers, needed to develop these skills associated with being a practitioner.
I noticed that as the age group goes up the more complex the toys get. For example, toys from age 1-3 seemed to have more of a learning, and sometimes nurturing aspect about them. Which makes sense because of Piaget’s theory of the sensorimotor stage implies that they are at the beginning of thoughts. While ages four to seven became more independent toys where they want to do “grown up things” like cooking, shopping carts and more mature dolls for girls. The boy toys became a little more aggressive like wrestling dolls, monster trucks, and super heroes. As the ages increased to twelve plus the toys became more interactive, intense and surfacing separating gender identification even more. Meaning that the stereotypes of boys and girls became more coherent. The boys isle had boxing gloves, footballs, and violent video games. Which could imply to adolescent girls that basketball or football is not a sport for them. For girls all of the toys stayed cohesive to a domestic lifestyle. I could convey that by what the children gravitated to in the store. Toys have a huge impact on children when it comes to gender simply because of the way toys appeal to them. If a young boy sees a blue toy he automatically suspects that is for his gender only and so forth. Parents also take a role in toy gender identification by implying to a girl that she shouldn’t have the basketball or etc. because she is girl and parents feels as though she should have girl
Participant observation is a method of collecting information and data about a culture and is carried out by the researcher immersing themselves in the culture they observing. The researcher becomes known in the community, getting to know and understand the culture in a more intimate and detailed way than would be possible from any other approach. This is done by observing and participating in the community’s daily activities. The method is so effective because the researcher is able to directly approach the people in the community in a natural context as opposed to taking the participant out of their environment. The aim of participant observation is to gain an understanding the subject’s life from their perspective, with the purpose of collecting more detailed information about a community’s habits, opinions, relationships and issues.

This paper will explore my findings of my observation of a young boy, age 28 months, named Jax. Jax is fun little man and happens to be my nephew. I will discuss the attributes and characteristics of Jax that I witnessed in the few hours that I had observed him. Starting with motor development skills, I observed that Jax is a very favorable walker. He is well coordinated, and loves to run. Still, just like any two-year-old, he still stumbles frequently. He loves to play with his toys and can pick up and grasp his toys well. He is great at maneuvering his toys and putting them where he wants them. I did notice that he did favor his right hand regularly. Jax did love to throw things, and catch them as well. Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them.

For the location of my naturalistic observational study I chose a public park with a splash pad which I frequently visit with my daughter. Since this site is quite popular with locals at any given time of the day there are at least over a dozen people present. As the park is designed for the entertainment of children the age group of the people varies. There are young children accompanied by their parents and grandparents as well as teenagers in groups. Therefore the above discussed park proved to be the greatest preference for me to observe the behavior of people in a natural setting.

Qualitative research was designed as a way to be directly connected with the subjects researched. Participant researchers may choose to merely observe and collect data or to be an active participant. Covert participation has the advantage of reducing the “reactive effects” of the social setting or group (Bachman & Schutt, 2012).
