Alternative Strategies The Object Relations Theory suggests that Mindy’s blurred lines of Mindy’s position as Mr. Marshall’s social worker and the role she had taken a friend to Mr. Marshall caused her problems with the relationship between her and her employer and Dr. Sharma. One strategy for proposal is to have Mindy engage in role plays that will help her to have a better understanding of how she stepped of out the boundaries of her role as a social worker. An advantage of this intervention is that Mindy can look at her actions from an outward appearance and see clearer how her boundary issues caused her to be attachment to Mr. Marshall to be disorganized. Mindy could possible enroll in a course that will assist her in the personal and professional practice to successfully navigate death and spirituality. An advantage of this strategy is that Mindy has the opportunity to receive further educations that will increase her competency. A disadvantage of this strategy is that Mindy may experience problems in the balancing her own self-conciseness. Mindy’s internal drive to advocate for her client could possibly result in problems with her super-ego. Interpersonal Therapy would be another ideal therapy used to assist Mindy with her role as a social worker. This therapy will assist Mindy in her relationship with Dr. Sharma. An intervention that could be employed would be to have a facilitated discussion between Mindy and Dr. Sharma, so that Mindy could receive clarification on her role as a social worker and Dr. Sharma’s role as a medical care provider. An advantage of this intervention is that after the meeting is completed, Mindy could begin the grieving process because some of the questions related to Mr. Marshall’s end life treatment would be angered. As a practicing social worker, I at times have found it difficult not be wrapped up in my personal thoughts and beliefs and transfer them to my clients. This is what happened with Mindy during her relationship with Mr. Marshall. Spirituality and faith often times are the guiding forces for many people including myself and although it sees easy to separate my beliefs from the task as a social worker, it is very difficult. There is policy, that guides my practice with my agency and there are core values that guide my interactions with clients and these are not congruent. For Mindy the medical center/clinic’s policies related to her job performance were to assist Mr. Marshall in planning for his treatment and end of life care. This took time as Mindy’s role as a social worker entailed her to synthesis all information provided to her by Mr. Marshall about his childhood, family situation, marital experience and his faith and to assist him in taking all of this information and preparing a care plan that was client directed. While in the midst of Mr. Marshall’s illness her social work core values created dysfunction within herself and she stepped out of the worker/client role into one of friend/client role. This is why I feel that Mindy’s competency would be increased if she was able to receive further educational
