As the numbers of overweight children soar, so do the complications that occur due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Addressing the problems of obesity early on in children’s lives can help create a healthy environment, while fostering a healthy mindset. Therefore, education about the importance of healthy eating coupled with increased physical activity will go a long way in helping children make the right choices. Healthy Foods in Schools is a program that was born from the Let’s Move initiative, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama. This program was created to address the growing obesity problem in America and to expose kids to a healthier environment. (Healthy Schools, n.d) Making small changes in the school-eating environment can create a big change in the health of each child. A simple piece of fruit and a serving of vegetables can go a long way to combat the obesity problem in school age children. “Given that many of our attitudes to health are set in childhood and that food consumption patterns are established early in life, it is clearly important that any attempts to produce long-term improvements in the nation’s diet should start with children.” (Erjavec, Viktor, Horne, & Lowe, 2011)
