Here in the United States, the government has a great deal of influence and say in the way in which people live their daily lives. Everything from the things said on a cell phone to sites searched on the Internet to the laws by which everyone must abide, to say that the government has a fairly decent hold on Americans’ civil liberties would be an understatement. Yes, there is a certain level of freedom here that is not found elsewhere in the world, but there is still quite a bit of government intrusion. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the next step in the government’s desire to exact some level of control and order on American society is through the food on people’s plates. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the levels of obesity among adults have risen from 13% in 1960 to 34% in 2008. In fact, it is predicted that by 2030, 42 percent of Americans will be obese and roughly 11 percent will be morbidly obese, which means they are carrying more than 100 pounds of excess weight (Marlow, 2012). .
Obesity remains a rising and concerning health issue. There are numerous ramifications that stem from America’s losing battle of the bulge. To start, there is the skyrocketing cost of healthcare that stems from this issue. As more people succumb to those diseases and conditions that are directly related to obesity, the cost for everyone in terms of medical care will continue to rise. There are public health concerns related to obesity and as the medical system continues to be taxed both from this issue and the rising needs of the overly large baby boomer population; medical services will continue to be heavily taxed. CONCLUSION
The government forcing this by enforcing heavy taxes on bad foods is not the way. The government should educate and encourage those Americans that want to live a healthier lifestyle, but it should, in no way, intervene to assure this happens. It tears at the fabric of what America is all about and only assures that people will feel less compelled to enjoy the democratic union in which they live and instead will start to wonder in what aspect of their lives the government will dabble in next.

Did you know that more than two thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese (Center for Disease Conrtol)? This is the growing problem in the U.S that we, as Americans, can’t seem to find a solution to. The government spends billions of dollars annually to help those with overweight/obese health issues. But the government does not directly help people by changing their diets and making them healthy enough to live without those medical expenses. This trend is also upwards and the number of obese/overweight Americans has tripled since 1963 (Smith). Americans today should be forced by the government to have a healthy diet and avoid or limit the consumption of fast food.

Since the percentage of obese individuals continuously rises, Bittman believes that the government should step in and protect the health of individuals by establishing a new tax on junk food. Everyone loves fast food, surgery desserts and indulging in sweet and salty snacks covered in chocolate. What people rarely think of is how unhealthy they may be eating and what they’re putting into their bodies. The consequences can be life threating if not taking the right procedures to maintain a healthy lifestyles. For years, the United States government has been trying to find a way to lower the obesity in the country. However, the approach it is using, i.e. taxing unhealthy food, is not the most effective one. People are going to purchase whatever products they wish, whether the price is increased a few cents or not. Junk food options are already set at a more reasonable price than healthy foods, enticing people to buy these less expensive goods. Even though putting a tax on other products, such as tobacco, has served the intended purpose, food is a necessity humans must have for survival. Society is used to consuming foods they want, and will continue to do so. Putting a tax on unhealthy food will not necessarily lower the obesity rate because there are other factors that contribute to this problem. Moreover, taxing measures are usually intended for the collective benefit of society rather than the individual. They are usually perceived as another way the government uses to take money out of the citizens’ pockets. Ultimately, thinking that higher taxes on unhealthy foods will help curb down the obesity rate in the country would be similar to say that cost is the sole contributing factor to this public health problem. Imposing taxes will not help lower the consumption level because these foods will still have lower prices than healthier choices. Taxes do not impact the nutritional value of foods, and their only predictable effect is to help in generating additional revenue for the government.
There is no doubt that obesity has taken its seat as one of the top disease that strikes the world today. In America, obesity has now spread through the country leaving 2 out of 3 adults either overweight or obese, and worldwide 1.5 billion are overweight or obese (Overweight). The cause of this disease stems from multiple reasons such as the increase in modern food production, putting out ample amounts of food causing the prices for meat, groceries, and especially junk food to plummet. Subsequently, Americans especially were more inclined to purchase more food and showed an increase in the average American house hold food intake by 1,000 more calories a day (Dreifus).
Policies implemented by the government have the potential to greatly impact the issues faced by Americans because of their food. One of the most serious epidemics to face Americans is obesity; a direct result of a lack of access to healthy, whole produce. The government has several options in solving this problem including food taxes, public education programs, and mandatory physical education in schools. A food tax on items high in process ingredients and low in nutrients should have a higher tax than whole foods. Much like the Cigarette Tax, a Processed Food Tax will persuade consumers to shy away from these nutrient-void foods and incorporate more healthy foods into their diet. Another solution to combating obesity is a series of public educational programs. By educating the public and even kids in school on the difference between processed and whole foods, individuals will be better able to distinguish between beneficial and non-beneficial foods. And finally, the most attention grabbing policy the United States government should be enacting is mandatory physical education. Including, but not limited to Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, the government should require mandatory physical education classes in schools because they found increased PE time raised the amount of time students were exercising or "engaged in strength-building activities" but lowered the amount of time spent in
Obesity has become a major health issue in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 1990 the majority of the fifty states had an obesity rate of 20% or lower. In 2014, all but one of the states has an obesity rate of 20% or higher. The obesity rate has been escalating, especially over the last twenty years. There is an ongoing debate over who is responsible for the rise in obesity. Radley Balko’s article “What You Eat Is Your Business,” expresses his belief that the responsibility lies with each individual, not with the government. While Yves Engler’s article “Obesity: Much of the Responsibility Lies with Corporations,” places much of the blame on corporations, he blames the government as well. Even though Balko and Engler disagree on the government’s involvement on the issue of obesity, their articles share similarities in their tone, logical writing style, and weaknesses.
Radley Balko, The author of the essay “What You Eat is Your Business”, would agree that in order to stop obesity, we must turn this public problem around and make it everyone’s individual responsibility. Instead of inflicting the importance of personal ownership, government officials, politicians and congress make obesity a public problem by prohibiting junk food in school vending machines, federal funding for new bike trails and sidewalks, and restrictive food marketing to children. Overall I agree that this manipulation of food options is not the proper way to fight obesity, however, I think that government should inform people about the food they are eating because then they have no excuses for not taking responsibility of the actions.
The government must have a say in our diets. Because the issues of obesity have already reached national scales, because the costs of obesity and related health issues have gone far beyond reasonable limits, and because fighting nutritional issues is impossible without fighting poverty and other social issues, the government should control the range and the amount of available foods. The cost of healthier foods should decrease. The access to harmful foods should be limited. In this way, the government will be able to initiate a major shift in nutritional behaviors and attitudes in society.
We make personal choices about what and where to eat. The government is not going to eliminate the unhealthy food because we think it is the cause of obesity. Ultimately, we must decide to either stay away from unhealthy food or eat them in moderation. While most obesity prevention programs aim toward changing the rate of children who become obese, many fail, causing an inefficient allocation of government resources. Much of what 's already been done has proven to barely be a speed bump in the progression that is the obesity epidemic. Several solutions which can be explored to effective halt this progression. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Obesity is a serious problem that increases year after year and affects the lives of many Americans. It is a problem that needs to be eradicated, but who is responsible for this problem? Some argue that individuals are responsible for their own weight; that it is a private concern. Some others, on the other hand, argue that it is a public concern; therefore, the government should play a significant role to stop reduce obesity from the public domain. They also argue that advertisements for junk food are factors that increase obesity. As persuasive as the advertisements can be and even with the help of the government, it is our decision to not eat healthy and end up in a state of obesity.

Among others, the food industry, governments and the private sector, all have vital roles to play in contributing to obesity prevention or more controversially, obesity continuation. These groups have the power to govern the constitutional elements of consumption, distribution, inspection, regulation, control and production of food. Competition within the industry is inevitable as it strives to supply food in a staggering abundance, at such a low-cost and without regard to geography or season. These high production rates have spawned powerful conglomerates as companies have merged to increase overall influence and reduce competition. In order to safeguard these positions, issues of regulation and conflict of interests manifest themselves in questionable industry funded food research centered on potential health benefits of their products (Sharma); these are conducted by government organizations responsible for promoting healthy eating habits but are funded by food manufacturers. They attempt to provide scientific proof in order to lobby the government to ensure a sympathetic legal framework to influence the implementation of nutritional policies. This repeatedly indicates that business interests are winning out over health concerns. Innumerable resources have been expended to develop and market products that are guaranteed to sell regardless of the global “eat less” message. In this essay I will explore how the food industry is promoting an environment in which the net result is an increase in body weight.
