Obesity is simply defined as having excess body fat, but these days it is not so simple with obesity in the United States. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years. According to Center of Disease Control And Prevention (Pg.1) The percentage of children aged 6-11 years old in the United States who were obese increased 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. As years passed things such as electronics, media, television and many more has made a bad impact on obesity. There have been organizations and activities put in place to help with this struggle with obesity.
Women during their life go through a thing called menopause which cause women to gain weight. Basically, during this time, women’s metabolic rates go down tremendously. Women have more of a hard time losing weight than a man does because their metabolism is very high. According to Web MD Clinic, (Pg. 1) Men require more calories to maintain their body weight. It would take healthy eating and a bunch of exercise for a woman to lose as much weight as when a man just cuts out junk food. In some cases it’s harder for the man than a woman, but very rarely.
There are many factors why some people are obese. It could be an illness. Most people don’t even think about that when they see an obese person. There are many illnesses that put an effect on obesity such as hormone problems, hypothyroidism, depression, and some rare diseases of the brain. These factors you most likely cannot control, but can help. Depression has a big impact on being obese and is now very common with it. Medication will help depression, but not your weight. People who start treatment at a young age are more likely to be successful with their issues rather than starting treatment at an older age. Based on the study that the WebMD Clinic has observed, about 30% of people who seek treatment for weight problems have difficulties with binge eating. People who have difficulty with weight management may be facing more emotional and psychological issues.
Of all these problems and factors of obesity, it can be treated and prevented. Having a healthy lifestyle will make it easier on managing your weight. The dietary and physical activity behaviors are influenced by schools, media, and family (ect.). School plays a role in this too. They provide tips and education about a healthy life.
