Recommended: The case against Obamacare

The reform of health care is a tremendous feat. The changes made to the program affect our country. This also means that any negative aspects of the program also affect us. President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also known as “Obamacare”, intends to improve health care and ensure that more Americans possess health insurance. While this seems like a good premise, the new system is flawed and is far from being the perfect healthcare system. Obamacare does have positive aspects. For example, it allows people to have access to more health services. The program also keeps women from being charged more for insurance than men as this was an issue in the past. The main issue with the program is its costs to the government. To ensure that low-income citizens are able to possess health insurance, the government grants subsidies to those who make an annual income of under $46,000. If the government grants these subsidies to people, the money has to be taken from federal and state funds. According to the Motley Fool, Obamacare is estimated to cost $1.2 trillion in its first decade (The Motley Fool). To cover these costs, new taxes will be put in place that mostly affect the health care industry and those who earn a high income. Individuals who make over $46,000 a year have fail to qualify for government subsidies and are required to pay full price for their insurance or file for exemption. This has the greatest effect on those who make just over $46,000 that can barely afford health insurance but still have to pay full price for it. Also, individuals who refuse to purchase health care face a fee called “individual mandate”. This is a tax that is the greater between $325 or 2% of a person’s modified adjusted gross income. This serves as an issue for a great number of people and is a large reason why a large percentage of the population opposes the new healthcare act.
