Introduction
The campus bookstore is where many students go to buy snacks, lunch, and beverages. It is only one of two available options on-campus. The other option is to buy food and drinks from the café. However, the store only sells hot food and full meals. It is also hard for students to know what the nutritional content of each item they are buying contains. Understanding the nutritional content in food and drinks is important for maintaining a healthy diet. To help track what nutrients are consumed the Nutrition Facts label was created by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. It was then required for food and drinks to come with a nutrition facts label in the 1990s. The nutrition facts label is based on what the FDA recommends

Carbohydrates are a good source for energy. However, the body can only burn a certain amount of carbs before those carbs are stored and are turned into fat. Figure 4
Nuts & Seeds had the least amount of carbohydrates. Again, pastries had the most amount of carbs. At this point it would be best to avoid eating pastries.
Pastries and Sandwiches have the highest percentage of total fats. Figure 5 also shows that candy and snacks have the least amount of total fats.
Eating Nuts & Seeds and select chips would be the best option. A reason why the chips remained low is because their serving sizes were lower than other food products. They also included “healthy” chips like Kale chips.
Figure 5
The campus store also sells several different drinks as well. Unlike, food, the drinks did not contain a significant amount of fats, therefore, fats were not accounted for.
Drinks are one the easiest ways to overconsume calories, sugar, and carbs. Drinking does not enable the stomach to feel full, so it can be hard to know when to stop

Surprisingly, the store had quite a few energy drinks that had little to no calories. This can be seen in Figure 6.
Figure 6
Drinking low calorie energy drinks would be better than drinking protein shakes. Unless, a person is active enough to burn the amount of calories in protein shakes they should avoid them.
Soda had less calories than coffee drinks and this is due to that fact that some of the coffee drinks had crème or were flavored. Despite not having the highest amount of calories, it did have the most sugar. As seen in Figure 7.
Figure 7
The protein shakes had the least of amount of sugar which is interesting given that fact that it had the most calories. Energy drinks have relatively low amounts of sugar as well, thanks to the zero calorie energy drinks. However, this could also be due to the fact that nutrition labels on 20 oz. soda bottles were 1 serving and labels on energy drinks were 2 servings even though they were in one can. Drinks have carbohydrates even though it may seem like they do not have carbs. This is why it is important to check label. One of the first images that comes to mind when people think of carbs is bread or pasta. But, carbs can still come in liquid
Soda is high in calories. A 20 ounce can of Coca Cola contains 17 teaspoons of sugar and 240 calories…empty calories devoid of any nutritional value. It would take the average adult over one hour of walking to burn off the 240 calories in a 20-ounce soda.Soda increases obesity risk in children. Each additional soda or other sugary drink consumed per day increases the likelihood of a child becoming obese by about 60%. Sugary drinks are connected to other health problems as well.Soda contains artificial sweeteners. While many people opt for artificial sugar to lower caloric intake the tradeoff for your health isn’t so sweet. Artificial sugars are linked to numerous illness and diseases including
Carbohydrates are the main source of the body’s energy. Most of the carbs people eat are converted into glucose sugar in the body. The cells can burn protein and fat for energy. It would use the glucose sugars to burn off first since it’s the most efficient energy source. Glycogen in the glucose from foods that is stored in the body. It’s stored in two places of the body, the liver and the muscles. Blood sugar glucose starts to dip and more energy is needed, the liver converts glycogen into glucose sugars. Then glucose would then be delivered by the bloodstream into the cells.

Energy drinks are used throughout the whole world. 30-50% of adolescents use energy drinks, they are not regulated by the FDA. Energy drinks are mostly a combination of glucose and caffeine. They also contain a chemical called Dopamine. Dopamine is a major chemical responsible for making us happy. When caffeine effects were off your body’s amount of adrenaline slows down as well. Once you stop taking caffeine your body’s amount of Dopamine slows down. Glucose is a sugar that your body uses directly as energy for basic body functions and activity. Too much glucose can lead to high cholesterol levels and fat production. Most of the sugar in energy drinks is fructose (high fructose). But caffeine has a stronger effect than sugar in energy drinks. It is more effective because it is stronger than sugar. It is not proven that sugar can give you more energy or even keep you awake longer. Sugar is commonly mistaken by people for a quick energy boost when in fact it has never been proven.
¨ Chocolate milk has 18 total grams of sugar (12 grams of lactose naturally found in all white milk and 6 grams of actual added sugar),¨ According to the Western Dairy Association, the fifteenth leading milk producer in the U.S. On the other hand, sports drinks and colas have almost three times the amount of added sugar. Cola has nine teaspoons of added sugar and sports drinks have about seven teaspoons of added sugar, according to Melissa Dobbins a Nutrients. This shows that colas and sports drinks are the problem when talking about obesity not the healthy nutrition drink chocolate milk, Kids are not obese because they drink chocolate milk because it has zero grams of fat and very little added sugar. This proves that kids are not obese because they drink chocolate milk, but, because they drink beverages with mountains of fattening ingredients. This proves that chocolate milk does not cause obesity but colas and sport drinks
What we choose to drink can affect our health just as much as our eating habits. It is because of this that more and more people are going for little-to-no calorie options rather than high calorie options, which are supposed to be the ideal, chose. But is it? Have you ever had a sip of diet soda or regular soda and wonder what makes this drink so good? Or maybe the exact opposite, like what makes this drink so bad for you? These drinks can feel so refreshing on a hot summers day or even after a long day of work. What’s not so refreshing is what these drinks can do to your body.
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
Nuts (I eat almonds and raw peanut butter, but most of the nuts are similar in nutrition facts).
A few foods high in nutrients that I could add to my diet are sweet potatoes, strawberries, pineapple, popcorn, and beans. It is known that sweet potatoes are one of the most nutritious vegetables that can be eaten. These potatoes are high in vitamin A and potassium especially if eaten with the skins left on. A good fruit such as strawberries can be easily added to my diet. Strawberries are high in vitamin C and are good for boosting the digestive system. Also, pineapples are great in protecting against cancer and lowing blood pressure. Another food that can be easily added to my diet is popcorn. Popcorn is a whole grain and an antioxidant. To keep popcorn as a good nutrient rich food then it should be eaten as is not with salty seasonings added to. On the other hand, beans are stuffed with fiber, and are high in low fat proteins. Beans also contain a numerous amount of nutrients and phytonutrients, with the combinations of both may protect against cardiovascular disease and diabetes. If I were unable to consume these few nutrients then supplements could be a second option. Taking a multivitamin or a one a day women 's vitamin would be able to make up for the few nutrients that I would not be able to consume through foods. If a certain nutrition like vitamin A is the only nutrient lacking then I could substitute it with a vitamin A

Regular soda is a drink that contains lots of sugar, man-made chemicals, and no nutritional value. An article states that “The calories in regular soda are coming entirely from added sugar, and you're not getting any value in terms of vitamins or minerals, or even good quality carbohydrate” (McMillian). This shows
Beverages can contain a high amounts of sugar in each drink, causing our calorie intake to rise. Sugary drinks are the number one source of added sugars in our diet, representing almost half of all added sugars we consume. Added sugars should be less than ten percent of calories intake of our diet, but now a days with all of the added sugars it tend to be higher. An average pop has approximately 120 percent of the daily maximum recommended sugar
Monster beverages have always been, and still claim to be free of preservatives, caffeine, sodium, artificial flavors and colors. Although many people believe that all energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine and are not healthy, the company’s mission statement which has not changed since Jan 5th, 2012 when the company changed its name, states otherwise.
Carbohydrates are the main source of glucose, which is a major fuel for all of the body's cells and the only source of energy for the brain and red cells. Except for fiber, which cannot be digested, both simple and complex carbohydrates are converted into glucose. The glucose is then either used directly to provide energy for the body, or stored in the liver for future use. When a person consumes more calories than the body is using, a portion of the carbohydrates consumed may also be stored in the body as fat.
Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are good for you and what they do to help the body function.
