There are different definitions of nursing. My definition of nursing is a professional who assesses individuals of all ages and collaborates with other health care professionals to develop a care plan, including interventions, to ensure the patient has an overall positive health outcome. According to American Nurses Association (2004), nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

This can be done by health promotion as well as health education. Nurses provide health education to individuals and communities to achieve better health in an effort to prevent illness. According to Venes & Taber (2013), an illness is a condition of being unhealthy in your body or mind and an injury is trauma or damage to some part of the body. Illness can cover a wide range of diseases and symptoms. They can be categorized as acute or chronic. Injuries may be caused by accidents, falls, hits, weapons and other causes. These injuries can range from minor to life-threatening. Nurses must have knowledge of human response to implement appropriate interventions. Treatment is the medical care given to an individual for illness or injury. Nurses provide appropriate treatments in an effort to ensure that the patient remains safe and has a improved outcome. Nurses must also be an advocate for their patients.
