What is a profession?
The focus of this paper is to choose an occupation that is considered a profession and describe the criteria below. I chose to write about nursing as profession because currently I am a registered nurse. This paper focuses on nursing as a profession, how is he Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs are used in nursing, and what nursing expertise do nurses use to meet certain needs. Nursing is a profession that addresses patients’ needs effectively. Throughout, this paper will describe the key competencies that are needed for professional success. As a nurse, it is very important to provide proper care to the patient as nursing is a very difficult and fast pace job.

Easier way to put this theory is that in order to satisfy higher order needs, the lower order needs have to be met first. Nursing serves all of these needs to be addresses in the manner of courses of treatment. Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs is oriented towards the interventions that needs to be taken into consideration to improve the patients’ health by making a change in their habits, this is done to get better outcomes for the patient. An example would be that of a alcohol abuse. The nurse seeks the help of outpatient treatment programs which can help the addict to recover from alcohol abuse because that basic level of health is important in order to restore safety (reliable food, shelter) and social needs (a proper job, family). All the people tend to satisfy these basic needs first which leads to self-actualization. Other needs required by patient include of safety, belonging, and love. Nurses have chances to address these needs by providing personalized care to all the patient by making sure that there is good communication between the nurse and the patient. Nursing’s development from an occupation to a profession follows the devotion and sacrifice of many amazing women throughout history. Considered to be one of the oldest professions, women have performed what could be considered nursing duties since the beginning of time. Although there have been many events and many individuals who have contributed to nursing’s evolution from the occupation it was once considered to the profession that now exists, the development of formal education opportunities and scholarly resources and the women who created them is what fascinates me most. A pyramid was proposed by an American psychologist, which came to be know as “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.” This concept that he brings through this theory is that to move up in human existence, in consciousness, we must first fulfill our needs based in order of their importance for our survival. If we are lacking security and safety we will not seek out, maybe even be unable to recognize, possess, or reciprocate, love.

1. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory in psychology about human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. Maslow expressed that individuals are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs should be prioritized over others. Maslow’s Hierarchy ascends from the bottom to the top as followed: physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization. The novel, "Life of Pi" follows a boy (also the narrator) who finds himself stuck on a raft for numerous days without any supplies. In the meantime, he must share his raft with a Bengal Tiger. Nurses take the traditional role of caring for loved ones to a whole new level of care.
The significance of this article is that nursing is continually changing. The role of the nurse will always be based on direct care giving, however, nursing as an occupation is professional.
Profession of Nursing is always regards as a complex, dynamic and noble. The nursing profession requires many things such as hard work, a vast knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a passion for the noble profession. All these qualities are needed to be an effective nurse. Today, nurses are living in a world of ever changing field of medicine .The present patient statistics poses, nurses are expected to take responsibility of accomplishing the requirements. The requirement for excellent nursing skills is added as well as well-formed skills in different aspect. Because of the high demand in excellent nursing care, the IOM have declared the recommendations for the future of nursing.
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.
Nursing and Qualities That I Possess to become a Good Nurse Nursing is the act of safely caring, protecting and improving our clients’/patients’ health and ability without causing any further harm or disability to them. Our primary goal is to restore and maintain good health physically, spiritually and psychologically. It is a science, such that one has to apply the nursing knowledge and technical aspects of practice. However, it is important to incorporate the act of patient-centered care, which is defined according to QSEN/NOF, as holistic care that recognizes the patient as the source of control and full-partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care with respect for the patient’s desire, values, needs and preferences. It has to incorporate with the nurse’s personality, i.e., certain qualities that the individual possess.
Each individual gets to a point in life whereby they assess their internal qualities, people reflect their profession aspirations and attempt to see which careers will make them happy in their lives. It is also important for a person to consider whether they have the qualities needed for a particular profession and also consider the available resources that will help him or her reach their set goals (Chafey, Rhea, Shannon, & Spencer, (1998). Every human being has weaknesses and strengths in their personal or professional aspirations. Having strength means that someone has the physical and mental power to perform things in a successful manner. On the other hand, weaknesses are the drawbacks, the inadequate lack of strength or power to accomplish important goals in life, and every human has some potential of being a leader in some way (American Association of Critical Care Nurses (2006). Nursing is a medical profession that involves the care and management of patients majorly in the hospital setting. This paper seeks to illustrate the fact that nursing is both a science and an art. Nursing is a science because it involves evidence based practice, education of the public, lifelong learning for the nurse and administrative roles that are allocated to the nurses. Nursing is also an art because nurses depend on intuition, have the capacity to promote positive change, are understanding and culturally sensitive.
