Ethics is an essential part of the nursing profession; However, it is the nature of each situation that determines which ethically moral judgements should be made. This essay will give further detail into the fine line that nurses and most healthcare professionals face in the workplace, it will address the nursing code of ethics and its impact on critical decision making. When faced with the challenges of making the right decisions, and determining if they are ethically professional or not, there is a thin line between right and wrong in nursing, and more often times than most can admit, that line can become blurred in order to save a patient’s life, or merely in order to protect our own. I would make this change specifically because this ethical theory is in relation to doing what is right by performing the actions with our best intentions behind it, as opposed to thinking about the consequences of those actions first. This is something in which Kant argued that in terms of consequence, we ultimately have no control over it, according to a framework for ethical decisions. With this ethical approach, our actions are taken from responsibility of having to perform our duty, and our duty is done precisely because it is our obligation to perform whatever the action may be, or in this case, nursing. When we become nurses, we don’t have the choice to not take care of the patient when we get to work, we have to do our job and perform our duty to the best of our ability, regardless of the consequences. Leading back to my earlier example, Patient X did not have any family present, but if he would have, and if they would have seen what we had to do in order to create a safe environment, they could have threatened a lawsuit.
