War and Nuclear Weapons

War. War never changes. Since the dawn of time, man has killed for the sake of their territory and their beliefs. Weapons evolved along side the intelligence of man giving people more ways to kill one another with quicker methods. When a neutron is split from a proton in the nucleus of an atom it causes an atomic blast. Over time these blasts have grown larger and stronger to the point where they could lead to the end of the world. Nuclear Weapons date back to World War II when the world was on the verge of one of the greatest wars in history. In 1942 German physicists learned how to split an atom which caused fear throughout the world. With Germany attempting to create an atomic bomb Einstein and Fermi developed a plan to defeat Axis forces. Fermi informed American Government officials of the situation but very few people saw it as an issue. Einstein then made an attempt of bringing awareness by sending a letter to President Roosevelt asking him to start an atomic research program. Roosevelt found it unnecessary but slowly over time he agreed towards Einsteins request. Thus the Manhattan Project began with a slow start but assured start. The Manhattan Project was ran in only a few universities and was kept secret from the public. The progress was slow but in December 1942 Fermi’s team created the first controlled nuclear chain reaction. A nuclear reaction occurs when the nucleus of an atom constantly reproduces neutrons (ushistory.org). After this discovery the Manhattan Project received more funds, got more facilities, and research sped up. In the end $2 Billion dollars were spent on research and about 120,000 people were employed but very few knew of the purpose of the project (ushistory.org). Finally on July 16 1945 Project Tr... ... middle of paper ... ...ng is being done about the issue. Humanity has reached a point where they now wield weapons that they aren’t capable of controlling. History has proven their potential power of causing massive murders. Today countries bicker over their weapons like kids and their toys. It’s obvious nukes need to be banned, otherwise the result will be beyond our control. Works Cited Energy-net.org. The Energy Net. N.D.
