In the past decade, natural disaster and climate change, mainly global warming have caused more and more people look at the environment carefully. More and more people address this problem seriously and stay to reflect on this question, ‘Is it the human activity that cause these problem?’ Because of this question, mechanical engineers try to develop technology that is environmental friendly to protect this Earth, since we are responsible at taking good care on Earth. After a long development, there are some success among different areas in mechanical engineering. However, there is a main debate among engineers about whether nuclear propulsion is also environmental friendly. Some said it can be wonderful energy resources for human being, some …show more content…
Pollution problem has direct impart to human living standard, so technology should not cause harm to human, otherwise who would like to use it. Therefore, environmental friendly technology should protect human being as well by preventing pollution. Barreras et al. made a great concept in this area, “[non-environmental friendly technology] are responsible for the emission of a very large part of the total amount of pollutants contained in the air, namely 40% of solid particles, 25% of CO2,….”(2012). They taught that non-environmental friendly technology can produce a lot of toxic gases which engineers should be aware with. It is because air pollution not only affect the environment, such as global warming, but also human activity and health, like acid rain and toxic fog. Another example given by Kempton and Letendre (1996) show that other pollution also should be considered in environmental friendly technology in order to protect human being. “[non-environmental friendly technology] has the disadvantages of ... environmental lead pollution during manufacturing and recycling” (1996). From this example, lead pollution during manufacturing and recycling become a disadvantages of a non-environmental friendly technology. Like lead pollution in this example can cause the death of some species, including human. From the examples above, pollution problem cause disadvantage to a technology, which engineers need to prevent, because it is harmful to human being. Therefore, an environment friendly technology should be nice to human being by reducing
Nuclear power has grown to be a big percentage of the world’s energy. As of January 18, 2013 in 31 countries 437 nuclear power plant units with an installed electric net capacity of about 372 GW are in operation and 68 plants with an installed capacity of 65 GW are in 15 countries under construction. As of end 2011 the total electricity production since 1951 amounts to 69,760 billion kWh. The cumulative operating experience amounted to 15, 15,080 years by end of 2012. (European Nuclear Society) The change that nuclear power has brought to the world has led to benefits in today’s energy’s usage.
When humans discovered fire, it was misused by being used as a weapon of war and hunting against both humans and animals which led to massive destruction left by occurrences such as forest fires. When humans developed a successful method of transportation it has led to environmental set backs. For example, when horses were the primary mode of transportation, manure was left everywhere in the streets of cities which understandably, led to the cultivation of numerous diseases. When gasoline cars took a rise due to their convenience, the Earth took a horrible environmental toll and the quality of life degraded to the rising levels of greenhouse gases. It seems that with every technological advancement introduced, there are always potential set
1. Cell phones, computers, cameras are only some of the different forms of technologies that has been affecting our environment. Technologies are causing air pollution right from the beginning of its production. The processes of how they make these technologies are made out of different elements such as lead and mercury that are known to cause health problems. Consuming resources is another reason that causes pollution to our environment. Since natural resources like trees that are responsible for filtering the air are being cut for the production, the chance of eliminating air pollution will be impossible. Continuously increasing number of electronic waste is another problem that contributes to pollution because people tend to buy new products and throw their old ones. Usually, a consumer buys a newer product every time because newer models are released more often.
After the United States developed the atomic at the end of World War II, interest in nuclear technology increased exponentially. People soon realized that nuclear technology could be used for electricity, as another alternative to fossil fuels. Today, nuclear power has its place in the world, but there is still a lot of controversy over the use of nuclear energy. Things such as the containment of radiation and few nuclear power plant accidents have given nuclear power a bad image. However, nuclear power is a reliable source of energy because it has no carbon emissions, energy is available at any time, little fuel is needed for a lot of energy, and as time goes on, it is becoming safer and safer.
Nuclear energy has is an overall success and continues to be because it is a reliable, efficient energy source that produces minimal pollution. Although it is a efficient energy source, it is also a massive destructive force that has been used in the past and can be used in the future if not properly defended against. America today can learn from instances in the 20th century such as the atomic bomb drops, exploration of fusion reactions, the knowledge gained from the three mile island accident, and from espionage. Nuclear technology is basically that manipulation of atoms in their current state. Usually radioactive elements such as high-grade plutonium or uranium are used in order to create a massive radioactive reaction that have the potential to obliterate any object in its way leaving a lasting negative effect on the environment. Nuclear energy was mainly researched for the atomic bomb droppings that occurred in 1945 as a result of Japanese oppression during World War II. The science of atomic manipulation, atomic radiation, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion was first developed in 1895. Research began to significantly speed up when the government took a large interest in the destructive force that nuclear weapons had the potential to hold. The only reason that the world ever had the experience of nuclear energy was because of World War II and oppression. Nuclear Energy came with a price of thousands of lives, that were not rightfully taken, but without those lives lost, our world would be different today, and we continue to learn from the mistakes and from the successes that we have had with nuclear technology.
When most people think about what is wrong with the environment, they can think of many things wrong with it. The amount of pollution that has either enter the air, land, or the ground. The amount of pollution within the air has been constantly been caused by humans doing a lot of activities that release a lot of carbon emissions. Activities such as deforestation of trees, the uses of automotive cars, and factories producing so much smog on a daily basis. With all of these activities, much of the air quality is poor and can cause many health problems for humans. As stated EPA, “Breathing polluted air can make your eyes and nose burn. It can irritate your throat and make breathing difficult” (EPA 4).
These burdens are amplified as the area is further urbanized; increasing demands for fossilized fuels, food, water, and property for additional urban construction. The impact of industrialization has transformed human life and produced extensive ecological deviations. In order to understand how the environmental impacts of ever expanding industrialized technology might linger to impact our health and that of our environment, we offer facts that should be studied. This paper suggests that extra research be conducted to enhance perception concerning advancing modern technology disadvantageous consequences on the safety of humans and their surrounding environment. Manufacturing of Energy Resources.
Attention getter: Fumes. Gases. Toxins. We cannot survive without air; even though, we must inhale any air that is available in the atmosphere. According to the Environmental Protection Agency “a new gas powered lawn mower produces…air pollution in one hour of operation as 11 new cars each being driven for one hour” (Springfels). If the society keeps producing technology, then the environment will be destroyed.
Air pollution according to the Wikipedia << is the introduction of particulates, biological materials, or other harmful materials into the Earth’s atmosphere, possibly causing disease, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as food crops, or the natural or built environment>>. Therefore, human being should be aware of the facts that the environment and all living creatures are dying. They need to understand the importance of natural items, the nature, etc…
In the 21st century, the world has changed in many ways. Some changes have improved the quality of life and health for many people. Others have affected people health and causing different kind of pollution that is harming the environment. That is technology we talking about, it is apply to every one of us in daily life, example the motor vehicles and factory it all producing dangerous and harmful gasses to the environment but we can not live without it.
Pollution is so harmful to human beings. Polluted water can cause many kinds of diseases, such as diarrhea, enteritis, and so on. And sometimes the diseases even take man’s life. Dirty air or air-borne garbage causes stinging eyes and running nose. Pollutants are destructive. They will cause runs in stockings and crack rubber tires and they always eat away at stone and rust iron. Time and time again, there are serious accidents that polluted the air. For example, At 1986 there was a bad accident at a nuclear power station in Russia. A cloud of radiation crossed the whole Europe. It is said that 125,000 people died in Russia as a result of illnesses caused by that accident. In 1984 there was an accident at a factory in India and a dangerous cloud gas covered the town of Bhopal. Over 2,500 people were killed that night, and hundreds and thousands of people were injured. Many of the injured lost their sight, and it really dangerous, even in our imagination.
Green technology is the technology whose main aim is reduce the impact of human activities on the environment. In other words the target of green technology is to consume less natural resources, reduce the emission, produce goods with energy efficiency, take care of health and safety issues and reuse and recycle the goods after their usage.
Every other day a new industries are being set up, new vehicles on roads and trees are being cut to make way for new homes. All of them, indirect way lead to increase in CO2 leads to melting of polar ice caps which increase the sea level and pose danger for the people living near coastal areas. Pollution can have an impact in our health not only affects people with impaired respiratory system such as asthmatics, but very healthy adults and children too. Exposure to pollution for 6 to 7 hours, even at relatively low concentrations, reduces lung function and induces respiratory inflammation and, healthy people during periods of moderate

Air pollution has become such a problem, that based from the World Health Organization (WHO), it says, “Outdoor air pollution has grown 8% globally in the past five years, with billions of people around the world now exposed to dangerous air, according to new data from more than 3,000 cities” (Vidal). The health effects of pollution could be irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat. It can cause wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and breathing difficulties. Including those things, it can also worsen existing lung and heart problems, such as asthma, and can increase the risk of heart attacks. Long-term exposure can actually cause cancer, and it can damage the immune, neurological, reproductive, and respiratory systems. In extreme cases, it can even cause death. Having the knowledge of these health effects helps us to better understand that pollution is extremely dangerous if we continue to not do anything about it. The people most at risk with air pollution are children, older adults, people who are active outdoors, and people with heart or lung diseases, such as asthma. Besides the health effects that air pollution has on people, it most definitely has its effects on the environment as well. Effects such as acid rain, which is precipitation containing harmful amounts of nitric, and sulfuric acids formed by nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels
