So first, even though the damage mechanisms are the same as a conventional explosive, a nuclear weapon, or atomic bomb, as they are more commonly known, is about a million times more powerful per gram, and at the sight of detonation temperatures can reach up to tens of millions of degrees. Within a six mile radius, most things will be totally obliterated, those lucky enough to survive, will then be hit with a shockwave causing them to bleed from every orifice. Any buildings still left standing will then be the victim of the intense heat, starting a firestorm, and with the help of that shock wave will spread faster than survivors can run from it. Within a ten mile radius, if they just happened to be looking in the right direction, survivors will then be blinded by just the light of the explosion, hit with a little less of a shock wave, and also hit with a surprise gust of wind, over one hundred miles an hour, carrying thousands of shrapnel projectiles flying through the air directly those who have just been blinded, causing more deaths. An atomic bomb also causes an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, which will knock out every electronic device in that range. Business Insider states, “A recently declassified document shared by nuclear historian Alex Wellerstein gives the verdict that scientists at the Los Alamos laboratory and test site reached in 1945. They found that "it would require only in the neighborhood of 10 to 100 Supers of this type" to put the human race in peril.” (Bienaimé, P. 2014). So .06 - .61 percent of the world supply of nuclear weapons was determined to be enough to “put the human race in peril”. A nuclear holocaust is not a nightmare that a fiction writer turns into a best-selling book. Its very real and could be coming really soon.
