Nuclear energy is energy stored in bonds holding protons and neutrons together in an atoms nucleus, when that bond is split an enormous amount of energy is released—nuclear fission, according to Nuclear Energy’s site. Nuclear energy has been a global energy alternative source for nearly half a century. Its predecessor, nuclear power, was developed for military use in World War II and became the biggest fear during the Cold War. After the Cold War, international use of nuclear weapons was banned, and an initiative to reform nuclear power into a positive model for energy. Nuclear energy is the most feasible alternative energy source because of its low environmental impact, relatively low cost, reliability, and high energy output. Contrastingly, three concerns of nuclear energy opposition are safety, radioactive waste, and limited sustainability power.
In the brief history of nuclear energy, two catastrophic disasters will always raise doubt about the safety, radioactive waste, and unsustainability of nuclear energy. The 1986 Chernobyl power plant accident in the Ukraine is the world’s most catastrophic nuclear disaster. According to the World Nuclear Association, the accident “was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators.” (World Nuclear Association) The total number of people displaced from their home from 1986 to 2014 is between 115,000 to 130,000 in a 30 kilometer radius; roughly 77 fatalities (World Nuclear Association). In 2011, Chernobyl was reopened as a tourist attraction after passing radiation assessments from the International Atomic Energy Association (World Nuclear Association). The development of more efficient technologies are in the developing stages. Along with increasing fuel and efficiency practices, safety policies continues to be a major focus.
