The existence of two separate state entities on the Korean peninsula has provided the world with a long history of seemingly static tension. The ongoing friction between North and South Korea leaves a lot of apprehension and doubts of if a successful and peaceful unification is even possible. Looking back, it’s clear the severely divergent directions the military regimes in the north and south headed is part of the catalyst to the current state of the Korean peninsula. The division’s presence becoming increasingly obvious as South Korea economic presence strengthened, and their standing in the global sphere rose. While North Korea suffered drastically in the economic sector. South Korea’s economic success represents an indirect threat to North …show more content…
Unit 684 was made up of 31 men that received harsh and life - threatening training in hopes that they would be successful in completing the assassination of the North Korean leader, Kim Il-sung. However when the Korean peninsula entered a time of intra-peace the mission was called off. Silmido symbolically reenacts the war and the human stories of betrayal caused by division of the two countries and the state. Silmido, much like The Interview, is a film that’s not made for political gain. Instead the film uses the politics as an underlying theme, but the film is about the comradery and brotherhood those 31 men shared. Silmido is a film that works to reinforce nationalistic pride in its audience, as cultural content exists as significant factor in South Korean filmmaking. Although, the film was about how the South Korean state had failed these men and how they were used as pawns for a political agenda. The pride these men had to be redeemed in their country and the pride they had for what they were hoping to achieve drove them throughout the film. It’s that pride that led them to commit suicide in the end of the film, in the name of what they were fighting for which at its core was the dominance and prevalence of South Korea. Historically, South Korea is known for as the larger global player of the two countries. South Korea’s economic success represents an indirect threat to North Korea’s internal political control, and is a major lesson for North Korean leaders. This film was a movie, made with Korean audiences in mind, therefore drawing on the knowledge of South Korea as a global contender and the representation of the drive and willingness that Unit 684 had to endure such hardships and then die for one’s country shows the overall success of South Korea’s ability to function as a country. Juxtaposing that to the portrayal and sheer determination to
Murder Could you believe or even imagine a charming, handsome and popular high school boy killing his ex-girl-friend? This is the case involving Adnan Syed in the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1999. "On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, disappeared. A month later, her body turned up in a city park.
The Korean War , although successful in preventing the spread of communism, was one of the first tests of communism in Asia. North Korea was strictly communist while South Korea was democratic. As usual, the United States supported democratic South Korea and the Truman Doctrine was applied to the Korean situation. The North Korean forces crossed the dividing line (38th parallel) and invaded South Korea. Thus, they provoked a war over communism. With the possibility of democratic South Korea falling to the communistic North, the U.S. stepped in and supplied aid mostly through troops. The U.S. then urged the United Nations to support South Korea and fight against the communist North. Once the North Korean forces were defeated at Inchon, they eventually got pushed back to the 38th parallel. However, against President Truman’s word, American General MacArthur decided to keep pushing back the North Korean forces by crossing the dividing line. This caused more trouble because the People’s Republic of China (Communist China) now sent troops to aid the communists against the pro...
In this article I will analyze the Korean People’s Army which represents the military forces of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. The Korean People’s Army is composed of 5 branches, Korean People’s Army Ground Force, Korean People’s Navy, Korean People’s Air force, strategic rocket force, and North Korean Special Operation Force. In this paper I will look at the big three: Korean People’s Army Ground Force, Korean People’s Navy, and Korean People’s Air force. I will talk about the force strength and some of the equipment that each brings to the fight.

North Korea is notorious as the “Hermit Kingdom”. Defensive and secretive to the point of paranoia, its history as well as its present conditions remains shrouded in mystery. What little we do know can be murky at best. The central govern...
Japan was imperializing late nineteenth century to early twentieth century. Korea was a Japanese colony. After World War II, the Japanese had to get rid of the colony. North Korea became Communist. South Korea wanted to be democratic. Later North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and entered South Korea. The United States answered by telling the United Nations to help South Korea. The United Nations did and they pushed North Korea so far back they hit the northern tip of china. China went into the war to protect their borders. At the end of the war they went back to where they were in the beginning. Neither side won. Between 1992 -1995 North Korea did many good things. It says on BBC News Asia that North Korea became involved in the United Nations and they agree to freaze nuclear weapon program those where the good they did but then there was a huge flood that created a food shortage this was also on BBC Asia. In 2002 it say in BBC Asia that nuclear tension increased in North Korea and United States. The North Korean communist nation controls the citizen’s religious beliefs so they have to belief in jushe which is a belief that they have to look up to North Korean leaders. The North Korean leaders make sure the citizens of North Korea belief in it if they don...
Korea ended its isolation in the mid-nineteenth-century age of imperialism, in 1882, as a defensive measure against its neighbors, signing “Treaty of Amity and Commerce” with the United States to provide “good offices if there is an external threat”. As a result of the rising Soviet-American rivalry at the end of World War II, the Korean peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel. The divide ran along the 38th parallel which is part of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) separating North and South Korea . The Soviet Union supported North Korea with Communist-control and the United States supported South Korea in democracy. In 1953 the Armistice Agreement ended three years of fighting (starting June 25, 1950) that killed over a milli...
The Korean War was a turning point in history. Sandwiched between the global scale of World War 2 and the nightmare of Vietnam, Korea is sometimes referred to as the “Forgotten War”. Korea might not be in the forefront of the public’s psyche, but it set in motion events that changed the world. Without Korea, history would have been very different. Korea forced the United States to develop coherent policy to deal with the perceived communist threat. The new policy established shaped the course of the Cold War, international politics, and the world today.
The demarcation line dividing Korea into two parts has led a nation to become polarized and also terminated the history of Korea as a single nation. The division of the country by an artificial line gave rise to more problems than solving the existing ones. While the United States was determined to create a trusteeship in the country, which would give its place to independent Korea after five or ten years, the Soviet Union opposed to the idea of an immediate independence. The Soviet Union had an intention to establish communism functioning in Korea. The United States, on the other hand, was not willing to l...
In WW II, Japan had gained control in Korea. At the end, when Japan was defeated by the Allies, the US and Soviet forces moved in Korea . Korea was divided to serve as the purpose to move the Japanese troops out. The line which was at the 38th parallel divided the country in about half. The Soviet forces were responsible for the north and the US for the south part of Korea. Later, this partition was made permanent. In 1947, the UN declared for elections to be held in all of Korea to decide one government for the country. However, North Korea refused to take part in the elections and didn't allow it. So on May 10, 1948, South Korea voted for a national assembly which set up the Republic of Korea. On September 9, North Korea set up the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. North and South Korea claimed the whole country and their troops fought several times between 1948-1950. The US removed it's troops from South Korea in 1949. It also said that Korea was outside of US defense line. North Korea saw it's chance for military action to take over South Korea.
Throughout the course of time, thoughts or passionate emotions develop as a society when approached with different situational barriers. Occasionally though, certain beliefs may also be forced onto a country during times of crisis or war. As the mid-20th century approached, a new Korea emerged after the Japanese invaded the country and officially declared possession in 1910 (Kimble, 1997). For at least 35 years, Japanese inhabitants demanded the small nation to acquire the Japanese language and imposed an education process that caused the Korean culture to repudiate its own history. The South Korean nation would finally get the chance to regain a sense of independence after the Korean War which began in 1950 and lead to the current agreement between the Northern and Southern parts of Korea in 1953. After constantly being abused by the Japanese government and the communist regime of North Korea that nearly demolished the character of the now acknowledged South Korea, the United States was able to terminate the Korean War. The army of South Korea is now highly protected and amplified with American forces. This restricts the capabilities of a modern military that has counted on a foreign military to defend its borders. Although seen as a cynical effect of the Korean War, one might also say that South Korea has had sixty years to develop its own distinctive economy and infrastructure
Korea gained independence from Japanese colonial rule in August of 1945 and also the division of Korea into the republic south and communist north in the 38th parallel. South Korea then was under the United States occupation from l945-48. Before the United States occupation South Korea had already organized a central People’s committees and established the Korean People of Republic (Memorial Foundation). Nevertheless, United States did not recognize any of the provisional or republic government. The United States refused to do so until there had been an agreement among the western allies. In 1954, there was a Mutual Security Agreement signed between the United States and South Korea, which states that they agreed to defend each other in the event of outside aggression (Memorial Foundation). South Korea has been under military authoritarian regime from 1961-1979 under President Park Chung Hee and from 1980-1992 under President Chun Doo Hwan. The Kwangju uprising occurred in May of 1980 after the collapse of the first milit...
...h Korea, was a battle that had no real outcome. Lives were lost and buildings were destroyed but there was no resolution that had settled the ongoing tension between both nations. The Battle of Incheon and the Battle of the Kapyong were two significant battles that turned the tide of the war towards one direction, through strategic fighting and with the help of allied countries that involved the United Nations, China and the Soviet Union. Many lives were affected as a result of this battle and it also was a vital advancement for the United Nations as the War allowed them to prosper. Despite the fact that the pressure between South and North Korea had not yet settled, both nations had learnt a great dealt from the War. Coming to understand the war fully, it is vital that we view the events both prior and after the war so that the War itself can be viewed as a whole.
The Korean War was a significant event in the cold war, it is also known as the ‘forgotten war” because it has been overshadowed by a much larger communist war in Vietnam. The main cause of this war was the constant spread of communism, As communism swept through taking over countries including china, the United States became terrified of it spreading, they quickly made a plan to stop it, and it is known as the Truman doctrine which states that the U.s will help any country that is being threatened by communism. However in 1950 South Korea which was under U.s control was invaded by North Korea. Now it was time for the United States to take action. At the end of the Second World War, the north was taken over by the Soviet Union, and the south was taken over by the Americans. At the Potsdam conference the United States and USSR agreed on a line which dived the north and south known as the 38th parallel line. There had always been tight relationships between the North’s leader Kim sung and Syngman Rhee the ruler of South Korea. North Korea had a much larger and powerful army than South Korea which made most of South Koreas population communist. In order for the south to win, they would need the help of United States troops. United States president Truman and General Douglas MacArthur worked together to save South Korea but, there goal was to take over Korea and get rid of communism.
Historically, the Korean War played a tremendous role in both North and South Korean societies. The Korean War was simply a victim of the rivalry between the Communism and the Capitalism. North Korea followed the communist beliefs, while the South Korea was backed up by the United States and its allies. The result of this war was deleterious, over 5 million people were killed from both sides. (Stueck, 1997). After experiencing a huge amount of loss both economically and socially, the Korean peninsula still remains divided. In other words, Korean people have experienced extreme tragedy for nothing in return. Visibly, the two Korean states have now a miniature intention to get into Militarized Interstate Disputes (MID). Accordingly, a realist
