A norm is the expectations of the right behavior. There are also folkways, mores, values, and sanctions. A folkway is norms that are not strictly enforced. Mores are norms that are strictly enforced because they are thought essential to core values or the well-being of the group. Sanctions are either expressions of approval given to people for upholding norms or expressions of disapproval for violating them. Values are the standards by which people define what is desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or ugly. Norms are basically everyday behaviors and how people act. Everyone experiences norm violations or either does a norm violation. Norms are a part of the everyday life. Every norm can be different depending on your When we learn values, we learn what is good or bad or pretty or ugly. Values motivate how we act, what we learn, guide the choices we make and what we hold in life. Every group develops the outlooks regarding the right way to reflect their values. Folkways are norms that are not strictly enforced. We expect people to follow the folkways but once one gets broken, we make it a big deal and then forget about it a couple of minutes later. Mores are taken much more seriously. Usually a person who steals, rapes, or kills has violated some of the community’s very important mores. Usually one group’s folkways can be another group’s mores. A taboo is a norm violation so strong that it brings extreme sanctions if violated. An example of a taboo would be incest. When a person breaks a taboo, the person is usually judged unfit to live in the same community as others. Taboo to me is like breaking the law and you can get in serious trouble. For my norm violation I invaded people’s personal space. I went to the marketplace on a Friday night (one of the busiest nights) and sat next to people. I chose this norm violation because people have done it to me and I thought it was funny but wanted to know how other people would They all reacted different. Invading peoples personal is violating a norm because it can make people very uncomfortable in many ways. Some or most people could get offended. Some people would be ok with it and just go about what they were doing before I even got there. I also observed a norm. I was at a restaurant and this grown man was eating everything with his hands. I think this was a norm violation because we learn to eat with utensils not our hands. In my opinion this was very gross. If it was a finger food or ribs then ok that would be normal but he was eating salad with his hands. It was very messy and not ok. The community has norms because of the different groups everyone encounters. Norms are once again a part of everyone’s lifestyle. Everyone has different norms or how they act. Norms are a significance because it shapes how people are today and how we act. The values of people’s life are to be learned by other people so we don’t violate a norm or say anything offensive to hurt people. The sanctions are normal. Everyone reacts to different things in different ways. For example when I invaded peoples personal space. Some people got up and walked away and other just said hi and I being there did not bother them. Everyone is different in their own
