Communication is really important in today’s world, it used every day both verbally and non-verbally. As important as the words are to speak to one another, nonverbal communication is just as important. As said by Dr. Maeta B. Johnson “more feelings and intentions are sent and received using nonverbal communication rather than verbal communication.” Nonverbal communication sometimes speaks a lot louder than words by using emotions, eye contact, touch, and even how close people stand to each other can speak wonders. Nonverbal communication is important for one on one interaction, friends, and family, but it can also be just as important when working with as a group. This ranges from the way someone sits, stands, arm postions and even the distance that is between people. The way someone sits can show how they feel. If someone is sitting with their legs opened, their shoulders are relaxed, and arms free then they are most likely relaxed but if someone is sitting very proper with their back straight, their shoulders are tense, arms kind of closed in, and depending on their head position that person is most likely is uncomfortable or nervous. The way someone stands however can determine how confident someone is , if a person is standing with their head down, kind of slouched, and their arms closed in, they will be perceived as unconfident opposed to someone who stands tall, shoulders back, and head held high that person will be seen as confident. Distant also plays a factor into body language. If two people stand far away from each other they are most likely strangers to one another, if people stand a good distance away from each other they are either friends or acquainted, and people stand very close to each other they are in relationship such as best friends, a couple, or family. Body language plays a big factor in a group. It can show how well a group works together and how comfortable the group members are with each other. If a group sits close together or stands close to each other they are more likely comfortable as a group opposed to a group that does not sit close to each other or stand close. Just like facial expressions or eye contact the body language will tell a lot about a group member. If a group member starts to distance themselves from the group something might be wrong or when if the person is sitting more upright, head down they could be stressed or could possibly feel left out of the group.
