On November 20th, 2016, I traveled down to the IFC Center in Manhattan to see the film Certain Women written and directed by Kelly Reichardt. I’ve never been to the IFC Center or even ever been to a movie house like this. Since, the movie came out on October 14th, 2016, there was actually only one other person on line to see this film. From talking to the man who was on line with me, Certain Women was a movie that held high expectations from people and something that people were excited to see. When I mentioned to him that this visit was my first time at IFC, he was shocked, although I’m sure it has to do with the fact that I looked like a movie critic with my black turtleneck, black framed glasses, and my coffee cup from some random indie coffee shop, this man started telling me all about the theatre like how some showrooms are really big while some are really small and the different films that he’s seen there. I never realized just how passionate people are over films and theatres. When we were finally let in, we were let into the tiniest movie theatre room I had ever seen. Basically, the film is about three women from Montana and their lives are interconnected. It’s three different stories about regular women put into one feature length film. The first story is about Laura (Laura Dern) who is a lawyer and represents a man, Fuller (Jared Harris, who I was surprised and delighted to see) that does not really respect her, the second about Gina (Michelle Williams) who is building a house and wants it to be authentic, and the third is about Jamie (Lily Gladstone) who grows infatuated with her night school teacher, Beth (Kristen Stewart).
