No Freedom for Women in Ancient Rome

When in Ancient Rome, women were granted barely, if any, freedom at all. These women were not viewed as their own person or respected as a part of society or even a human being. They were not even granted their own proper authority to a nice strong household. The conceiving of a child and the expectations of an ideal woman stayed the same throughout most of Ancient Rome’s history, although some did improve after a while. The rights among the Ancient Romans were unequal and very unfair to women in their empire.
Women were not allowed any freedom whatsoever especially in society. Females had to remain in guardianship even when they attained their majority. Not a single female voice echoes through history. No voice telling the tale of how her gender was treated. Nor, how she felt about her position in the society. Not one woman had ever been able to do this. Women had reached certain goals of virtuous acts. They got some respect and this they deserved, if not more. Women who had not reached these goals were expected to take their very own lives most of the time by hanging themselves and kill themselves because they were considered wicked and non-virtuous. This was not fair because some women couldn’t even live up to the expectations that she was given, both physical and mental expectations (View Article: Feminae Romanae 1). Women were not allowed to be in between virtuous or wicked. You were either one or the other and there were no exceptions whatsoever (2). To men the women were thought of as weak in the body. This made them assume that they were also weak in the mind and this assumption even made it into the law of the Ancient Roman society. All of the expected virtues were embodied by historic women in Ancient Rome. The Sabine women are credited in helping launch the Roman Empire in the 8th century B.C.E. (2).0 A non-independent wealthy women could choose to be a priestesses if she had wanted to become one (Women 2).
A public statue was able to be dedicated to a women of society.
Women’s freedom was growing vigorously and still had a long way to go. They were able to become individuals in some cases but not many. They had much more authority than they did at the beginning of the Ancient Roman Empire. Women’s freedom was starting to grow but it still stayed unequal and unfair to them for most of the history in this specific period of time.
