The Holocaust was one of the darkest times in history. Both Night, by Elie Wiesel’s, and Roberto Begnini’s film Life is Beautiful, are set in the time period of the Holocaust. The Holocaust is portrayed very differently in the two pieces. Night has a much more serious tone. It tells how it really was. Life is Beautiful has a happier tone. It uses humor to explain what is happening. Night and Life is Beautiful are similar in the strong emphasis on the father-son bonds formed in each. Also, even though they were written in the same time period, the way that they portray the Holocaust is very different. Lastly, in each the boys are affected by what happened to Jews during the Holocaust. These pieces present themselves as powerfully magnificent and moving, but when it comes to the question of which is more effective in telling the story of the Holocaust, the answer is simple. Night.
Night and Life is Beautiful were written with a strong bond between the father and son. Wiesel and Joshua are dependent on their father, as each respective man tries as hard as they can to protect their son from the horrors of the 1940’s. This shows how special and important family was to the Jews during that awful time. It also showed how much they needed each other. When Joshua’s father died, he didn’t ever notice, because he was too busy enjoying being reunited with his mother. However, when Wiesel’s father died Wiesel didn’t know what to do. Wiesel even said, “I spent my days in total idleness. With only one desire: to eat,” (Wiesel 113). Wiesel had lost the want, even the desire to live. His father was gone. Night really captures how much it affected people.
In summary, Night is more effective in telling the story of the Holocaust. This is because it tells what really happened, and does not try to lighten and sugar-coat the dark subject. It also showed how much Wiesel was affected by the death of his father, which was more characteristic of the Holocaust than the happy ending in Life is Beautiful. Also, the way Wiesel changes in Night shows the reader how awful the Holocaust really was. Because of how real Night portrays the Holocaust, it has a greater effect on the readers.
Elie’s loss of innocence and childhood lifestyle is very pronounced within the book, Night. This book, written by the main character, Elie Wiesel, tells the readers about the experiences of Mr. Wiesel during the Holocaust. The book starts off by describing Elie’s life in his hometown, Sighet, with his family and friends. As fascism takes over Hungary, Elie and his family are sent north, to Auschwitz concentration camp. Elie stays with his father and speaks of his life during this time. Later, after many stories of the horrors and dehumanizing acts of the camp, Elie and his father make the treacherous march towards Gliewitz. Then they are hauled to Buchenwald by way of cattle cars in extremely deplorable conditions, even by Holocaust standards. The book ends as Elie’s father is now dead and the American army has liberated them. As Elie is recovering in the hospital he gazes at himself in a mirror, he subtly notes he much he has changed. In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie loses his innocence and demeanour because he was traumatized by what he saw in the camps, his loss of faith in a God who stood idly by while his people suffered, and becoming selfish as he is forced to become selfish in the death camps to survive.
Night by Elie Wiesel was a memoir on one of the worst things to happen in human history, the Holocaust. A terrible time where the Nazi German empire started to take control of eastern Europe during WWII. This book tells of the terrible things that happened to the many Jewish people of that time. This time could easily change grown men, and just as easily a boy of 13. Elie’s relationship with God and his father have been changed forever thanks to the many atrocities committed at that time.

The novel begins during the years of 1942-1944 in Sighet, Transylvannia, Romania. Elie Wiesel and his family are deported and Elie is forced to live through many horrific events. Several events such as deportation, seeing dead bodies while at Auschwitz, and separation from his mother and sisters, make Elie start to question his absolute faith in God.

Through this medium, Wiesel still manages to capture the horrors of the camps, despite the reader already knowing the story.

Elie Wiesel was affected because of his time in the concentration camp and the things that they did to him and others. The oppression of Elie and Chlomo begins in 1944, when the Germans constrain the Jews of Sighet into two ghettos. During the time of Nazi supremacy, Elie and Chlomo are forced to travel to various concentration camps, including Birkenau, Auschwitz, and Buchenwald.
In Eliezer Wiesel’s novel “Night”, it depicts the life of a father and son going through the concentration camp of World War II. Both Eliezer and his father are taken from their home, where they would experience inhuman and harsh conditions in the camps. Elie and his family later departed to the unknown were the Nazis sent them to a concentration camp in Auschwitz.
After watching the movie Schindler’s list and reading the book night you can obviously spot some of the similarities between the two of these stories. The movie Schindler’s list directed by Steven Spielberg is about a nazi named Oskar Schindler. He started making money of the jews and the war at first. Then Oskar Schindler had changed for the better to save 1,200 jews from being killed in the holocaust. The book Night written by Elie Wiesel is about his time going through the holocaust as a 15 year old jew and having his faith tested every day for about one year. Sure these two stories are completely different type of views but there are some comparison and contrast that I have found by watching Schindler’s list and reading the book

Finally, Elie was taken to his third and last camp, Buchenwald. Buchenwald is where Elie’s father ultimately died of dysentery, only days before the American troops came to release them. In Night, Elie Wiesel uses the title night to symbolize the darkness of these events and the lifelessness of faith.
