A large nation discovered in West Africa that home to around 155,142,000 human beings, lies Nigeria. Surrounded by a body of water, it is the most populated country found in Africa. Furthermore, it is the most populous countries in the entire world. With their inviting resources such as petroleum fields, they attracted many individuals who wanted to take over their land. They went through years of torture trying to become colonized and persisted on trying to gain independence. Similarly, this country can be compared to the United States (Donnelley).
The geography and environment of Nigeria contains the following. Nigeria is located in the north west of the African continent. The Gulf of Guinea is the northeastern most part of the tropical Atlantic Ocean. To the north the land mass is arid and flat. The central region is tropical and hilly. There are also lowland and southeastern mountains in the south. The geography varies significantly from region to region. There are southern coastal swamps in the north that contains tropical forests, woodlands, grasslands, and semi-desert plains. The weather conditions are different all over the place. There can be soil degradation; oil pollution –water, air, and soil. Nigeria’s experiences two types of seasons, a wet and dry season. A wet season usually starts from April and ends around October. There is a south westerly wind that brings cloudy and rainy weather. There is also a dry season that starts from November and ends in March. This is when an easterly wind brings dust and fair weather. (Dowing).

“Nigeria has always been a divided country plagued by weak governance, ethnic cleavages, and corruption”("The Historical Background of Boko Haram", 2014). Also, “Boko Haram was born in this context, with religious fervor growing in the Muslim north and finally manifesting itself in violent Islamist terrorism"( "The Historical Background of Boko Haram", 2014). When the British pull out the region, it left the Northern parts of Nigeria unstable and not ensuring that northern Nigeria opened the door to corruption by terror groups. “The system led by Bifurcated country with a productive south flush with oil wealth and impoverishes north struggling to reconcile modernization with dictates of the orthodox and rapacious power broker”(Wall, 2015). The country was not modernized like the southern part of Nigeria and majority of the people were uneducated and poor.
Niger, home of the free flowing Niger River, is a Sub-Saharan, western African nation. Sadly, it is an extremely poor country because part of the country is desert and less than 3% open for crop use. The present economic situation is bleak at best. Yet, the vibrant tradition and history of this country lives today in its tribes and its people even through all of its adversities. From severe droughts to military coups to a dysfunctional government to the culture has stayed strong.
Africa has a regular coastline characterized by few indentations. Because of the smooth coastline, natural harbors were non-existent. Today, however, there are important coastal cities, such as Lagos and Dakar. With the exception of the Mediterranean coast, most of the coastline is low-lying , generally narrow and rising sharply to high elevations. The African climate and topography varies greatly. The Portuguese arrived in Benin, in modern Nigeria, between 1472 and 1486 to find an established and ancient kingdom with remarkable social and ritual complexity, with art that was comparatively naturalistic, and with a political system that was, on the surface, recognizable to the Europeans: monarchy. Even more importantly, they found a land rich in pepper, cloth, ivory, and slaves, and immediately set out to establish trade (Ben-Amos 35-6). Though we often imagine "first contacts" between Europeans and Africans as clashes of epochal proportions, leaving Europeans free to manipulate and coerce the flabbergasted and paralyzed Africans, this misjudges the resilience and indeed, preparedness, of the Benin people. The Benin were able to draw on their cultural, political, and religious traditions to fit the European arrival in an understandable context. Indeed, as the great brass plaques of the Benin palace demonstrate, the arrival was in fact manipulated by the Benin to strengthen, not diminish, indigenous royal power.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria also know the Giant of Africa is located along the southern coast of Africa. They have the largest population in Africa and, shares borders with Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin. Nigeria is the home to 250 ethnic groups making up around 177 million people. About half the population follows Islam, while 40% are Christians and then another 10% are animist. Nigeria is one of the largest producers of Oil in the world along with tin, coal, and iron ore.
Nigeria is located in Western Africa bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the South. Its neighbors include Cameroon and Chad to the east, Niger to the north and Benin to the west. Nigeria is a very important country in Africa since it exports oil worldwide.
According to Samuels in Case Studies in Comparative Politics, Nigeria began as a group of states and empires, which were conquered by the British Empire who ruled Nigeria through indirect rule with varying degrees of rule in North and South Nigeria (Samuels, 323-326). Since they were granted independence in 1960, three republics have been created and each has ended by military rule, which led to the creation of the fourth, and current republic in Nigeria. In the current regime Nigeria’s GDP is ranked 108 of 156 and has been decreasing, lower than some of the non oil-producing nations in Africa (“Nigeria”).
