Poetry gives people the ability to express their thoughts and emotions through written words. The technical term found from Webster is a “literature in metrical form with the evocation of feeling”. However poetry has a much deeper connotation to others than Webster can describe. For example it is a way of life for some, while for others it helps dispose of stress and clear the mind. One particular person who exemplifies his oral poetry in a colorful, dramatic, historical, and entertaining manner is a man who goes by NicePeter. NicePeter’s poetry is most clearly seen in his rap battles which are called Epic Rap Battles of History. The Epic Rap Battles of History is when two prominent figures whether historical or cultural face off in a verbal dual to determine who is the “spit” or “battle” champion. NicePeter uses a multitude number of ways that were discussed as what makes successful oral poetry, than he applies these characteristics to his raps and that helps to make his rap battles so successful. However, what makes his battles so successful compared to other rap battles? Is it the presentation, is it the humor, his character choices or is it his rhyming scheme that he uses? To understand and make an educated decision first the realms of poetry, oral poetry, and the rap battle needs to be evaluated and see what areas make NicePeter’s battles so epic. What makes exceptional poetry? John Haws believes that the arousal of your senses and a message that hits home is the key in creating successful poetry . Connecting the senses to the audience’s senses can be difficult however if achieved then the poet can display their emotion effectively while becoming successful in their work. When participating or if attending an event like this then it I would strongly recommend that if you get offended easily then not to go. Most rap battles tend to use to profanity quite a bit as evident in NicePeter’s Epic Rap Battles of History but he is no exception to the rule. Either oral poetry or rap battles can be ways of effectively passing expression about a subject or about a person to the audience if done correctly by following the previous rules.
