“The Newly Discovered Power of Digital Technology”

Disinformation Campaigns are defined as a false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately. It is synonymous with and sometimes called "Black propaganda." It may include the distribution of forged documents, manuscripts, and photographs, or spreading malicious rumors and fabricated intelligence. Disinformation should not be confused with misinformation, information that is unintentionally false.

Who uses “Disinformation Campaigns” and what is the purpose of running such campaigns?

Disinformation campaigns (DCs) are often used by many types of organizations such as political parties and organizations, various corporate groups involved in promoting industries that try to win over prospective customers/clients, and totalitarian governments trying to pacify the general public.

Further, some disinformation campaigns are used to start, or quell, riots whenever the general populace is getting “out of control” or whenever the public perceives an injustice (real or imagined) or simply perceived due to misunderstandings, fueled by real, or imagined, situations. Finally, disinformation campaigns are often used during war times to confuse the enemy, or to mollify, persuade, or delude the general populace that are affected by the war. Some DCs revolve around race relations with misperceptions on both sides of the issues.

Unfortunately, many people have tendencies to believe stories based on their political, religious, or cultural belief systems. It is difficult to find people who can disassociate themselves from their biases in order to look at information logically, and based on facts. Regarding the accusations that there were no weapons of mass-destruction in Iraq, which was one of the main reasons to attack Iraq, it was later reported that those chemical and biological weapons were found. The Iraqis has them buried throughout many different places in the country. Although they claimed to have destroyed most of it after the war, more were found later. For more information, the U.S. CIA made numerous reports about the finding and destruction of chemical and biological weapons.
