World War I also referred to “The Great War” began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. World War I was started by the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo over who controlled Serbia. Austria soon declared war on Serbia. World War One included the following countries: Turkey, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, and Germany in which they were known as the central powers and Japan, Italy, United States, Portugal, France, Britain, Russia, Belgium, Greece, Romania, and Serbia which was known as the Allies power. Unfortunately, World War One didn’t have great technology. During World War One, technologies such as tanks, poison gas, and machine guns were invented for the sake of the war.

The idea of a “caterpillar track” tank first was brought to attention when a British representative saw Holt Manufacturing Company’s demonstration model. As soon as he saw the model, he immediately brought the idea back to a British general. He soon realized how beneficial the caterpillar track tank would be. He saw the tank beneficial in two major ways: it would enable the army to travel over the steepest hill and travel across the not so fertile soil in which was impossible by any other combat vehicle.

According to Winston Churchill, it is impossible to actually say who invented the tank. The idea of the tank was adopted by many different people, but Uncle Ben’s caterpillar tracks stuck out and soon the tank would be the basis for war. The tank was first used by the British in the Battle of Somme on September 15, 1916. The tank was first majorly born in the Great War, specifically after the Battle of Marne, which was when trench warfare had first began and open warfare soon came to an holt.
