1. You are a new social worker working with Jane, a single mother of twins. Jane has been working hard to obtain a promotion at the telemarketing company where she has worked for many years as a sales representative. She has a physical disability and uses a wheelchair, but has complete use of her arms and hands and does not require any accommodations for this job; nor will she need accommodations for the promotion. Her competitor for the position, Stanley, is known to his friends as ‘Stan the Man.’ He is a triathlete and has never taken a sick day. Jane, meanwhile, took six weeks family medical leave to have her twins, and from time-to-time has had to take sick days to care for the children. Stanley and Jane began their jobs on the same week, so their seniority (time-in-position) is the same, and both were highly recommended for the promotion. Mr. …show more content…
Hypothetically, this could be considered classism because depending on how Carrie feels about how Jess possesses the same skills but different resources, therefore she could feel as if she is more superior than Jess. On the other hand, if someone were to say Jess will never rise about the economic circumstances of her family, this would be an example of both classism and racism. However, it depends on the actions and feelings towards each other or from a middle person. It is considered both because Jess is from a different cultural background than Carrie. Therefore, she is breaking the class barrier. American Indians have been depicted of not being able to comprehend or maintain the same knowledge as a white person, since white people are noted as superior. Additionally, Jess is from an impoverished reservation which could give off the impression that she is not equipped with to handle the harshness of upper
Class is a “relational social categorization based on economic, cultural, and social characteristics” (Barnes 2016) this includes a person’s: income and wealth, networks and connections, cultural knowledge, and social status. When a person has a high social status, that often means that they have more power in society compared to a person who is in a lower social class than they. A good example of class and how it separates the lower classes from the higher classes are private schools. Private schools are often very expensive and people who are in lower class systems often cannot afford to send their kids their, causing an even larger gap between classes. In Conley’s memoir, with him switching schools from a public, working class school to a private, middle class school shows how the schools that people go to can greatly effect their
On numerous occasions, I left work transported the children and went back to work to remain into the night. On other occasions, I left work during the day to take Stephanie to doctor’s appointments or meetings with the worker’s compensation attorney we retained to pursue her injury as compensable injury. This too required that I work late or on weekends to carry my responsibilities at work. There is no doubt that I was not able to make up the short fall created by my extra parental responsibilities. In the attempt to keep up I worked tired and sick, late in the day and early in the morning. I worked on holidays that were scheduled to be days
Identify and explain the three major sources of conflict and misinterpretations in social work practice: culture-bound values, class bound values, and language variables.
“I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group,” Peggy McIntosh wrote in her article White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack. Too often this country lets ignorance be a substitute for racism. Many believe that if it is not blatant racism, then what they are doing is okay. Both the video and the article show that by reversing the terms, there is proof that racism is still very existent in this world. By looking into A Class Divided and White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack along with their ability to broaden the cultural competence, once can see how race is still very prominent in our culture.

Individuals who experience racism and classism live in a paradoxical world since, while these factors only cause an internal barrier within them, it remains their task to overcome such prejudices and to achieve their goals regardless of whether it is beyond what's expected of their capabilities.
She was born in one of the most racist states in all of America, which is Mississippi. She was raped at the age of 9 and had a baby at the age of 14, and her parents were in poverty. She wasn’t supposed to make it, but she worked hard, she pushed harder than most and with the meritocratic system, her hard work eventually paid off. Oprah is now worth $3 billion. This is why the meritocratic system is the correct system and the fairest system; there should be no need to alter it. You get what you earn, that’s how it should be. When viewing this image, observe what the message is saying. Jim and Seng have the same IQ of 150. However, Jim is going through extra measures to reach success while Seng is not. Therefore, Jim is going to be more successful in the meritocracy model, which is fair. Jim and Seng are both getting basic education, but Seng stop there he didn’t work beyond that. However, Jim when and got the best books he can afford, he got iso tutors, he found programs that can teach him things that basic education can’t teach. Jim worked harder than Seng, and that’s why he will most likely be more successful than Seng ever will. How would an individual feel if they know

The field of human services is a complex and encompassing profession, which focuses on the well being of individuals and groups. While there are a number of components that fall into the duties and sphere of influence of a helper, there are generally three main “functions”: social care, social control, and rehabilitation (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 9). Social care refers to assisting individuals who are unable to care for themselves (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 9). Social control refers to providing assistance to individuals who can care for themselves, but have been unsuccessful in doing so or have done so in a way that defies generally accepted social norms or community laws (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 9). Lastly, rehabilitation refers
Disadvantaged college students are the majority in college today, were yesterday, and will be tomorrow. At times disadvantaged college students feel ashamed of their cultural background. Disadvantaged college students feel ashamed because they feel other people will put them down. They don t want to talk about it. Concerning shame because of social conditions, Bell Hooks says that Class differences were boundaries no one wanted to face or talk about (95). Yet concealing cultural background can cause misunderstanding among peers.
The field of Human Services can be very challenging. However, it can also have moments of being very rewarding. Human Services, according to the National Organization for Human Services, “is broadly defined as having a unique approach towards meeting the goals of human needs. These goals are met through interdisciplinary knowledge, being involved with the totality and overall quality of one’s life, remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment throughout the process” (NOHS, 2009). With the ability to work well with people, it is evident that Human Services personnel would make a positive contribution to our world.
I decided to interview my older brother’s friend, Cory Ringlein. I have known him most of my life and he has suffered from lymphedema as long as I have known him, this is important because his mom was a social worker before she stopped working to focus on Cory’s illness. I know this was pretty influential on Cory; he watched his mom work as a social worker and helped him make the decision to be a social worker.
The social workers in both videos gathered information regarding each of the client’s issues. Another common denominator in both videos is that both of the social workers repeated what the client had said in their own words to allow the client to feel heard and understood. In the first video, social worker Karen asked direct questions relating to Mike’s alcohol addiction while also addressing how the addiction impacts his relationships including his marriage. Karen also addressed inconsistencies with the client doing so appropriately and quickly. It appears that in the first video, Karen focuses on the reality of the issue at hand to assist the client with establishing and accepting
In the film The Blind Side (2009), the society is depicted into very classist categories. There is a clear distinction between the rich and the poor, as it can be seen when comparing Michael to MJ and Collins. Looking distinctly at their education, a difference in quality based on their class is very clear. When Coach Cotton discusses Michael’s transition into the elite school he states, “he’s a brave kid for wanting to come here, for wanting a quality education, an education denied to him by the poor quality of school he attended” (2009). Right from the beginning of the film, this sets the tone of the difference between the upper and lower class and establishes the way the society is categorized. Through
Denied a job, missed opportunities, dating issues, societal oppression, and political targeting – These are all common examples of what happens when classism exists. Class, the economic or social status of an individual, in America is extremely important and can be easily used as a weapon against the masses. Classism as defined by Merriam-Webster is the "prejudice or discrimination based on class" (Merriam-Webster, 2017). Using class, or economic status, as a view point for an individuals, or group's worth, has been happening for many years. The act of discriminating against someone(s) based on this is at the heart of classism. This discrimination could be passing someone up for a job opportunity. Denying an application to college, apartment,
