The lack of the use of the social media on college campuses is much of the discussions that may present themselves throughout the future academic institutions. What is Social media? Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking(the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself). Social media can bring ease to many useful resources on or in an institution. Since, we are discussing about the uses of social media(SM) on campuses there may be many uses – positive and negative – of the network. SM or Social Media would serve as a network for many academic uses such as :- addressing attendance, keeping records of grades, power points, etc.
There are two sides that present themselves when discussing SM on an academic institution. The first(positive) side that presents itself is the business aspect of said network in an institution. With a social network not only is it easy to modify and stay up-to-date, but you can also make it easier for communication, organization and advertisements. Being a college student, my observations studied over a course of one year showed the results of difficulty to communicate for students due to the size of the campus, size of the student body, and sometimes its just natural demonstrations of an introvert student. For the sake of privacy let's call her Maggie. Imagine not getting into college because of your social media account, an easy thing to prevent. This happened to Maggie who was getting into Bowdoin College in Brunswick. She didn't realize colleges look at your social media account until she tweeted harmful comments and could no longer attend the college (Singer). This is just one scenario of the 12% who get rejected every year because of their social media. Don't be that person, and the number one rule is if you don't want your parents to see it don't post it. One of the most widely used technologies is the Internet, or also known as the World Wide Web. “In August 1981 about 200 computers hosted Web servers. By July 1998 there were over 36 million Web servers, that are hosts to approximately 150 million people” (Strauss). The Internet proves to be very beneficial to education, since students have unlimited access to millions of websites with tons of information. There are only so many newspapers, journals and magazines that you can find in libraries or subscribe to. Therefore, the Internet offers an unlimited pile of information that students can always have. Moreover, students are enriched with the most current information in any subject, along with regular updates. Students are able to use the Internet anytime of day, as long as they have a computer at hand. The research process will not have to end when the school day is over (Wissick, 82).
There are many school-wide behavior expectations that will included in my future planning to establish a learning environment and decrease disruptions in the classroom. For this reason, I will teach social behavior to students during my lecture and provide opportunities so they can interact among each other. According to Flannery and Fenning (2014), teachers need to recognize and respond to the need to teach appropriate social behavior at the same time they are teaching the specific lesson (Flannery & Fenning, 2014). I chose these expectations mainly because it helps students meet their needs with a positive behavior and provide opportunities for students to develop social skills. Teachers need to provide opportunities for all students to practice and enhance their social skills (Banks & Obiakor, 2015). Another reason why I chose these expectations is because it enhances student’s positive behavior of culturally and linguistically diverse students. For instance, different resources will be assigned to students where they will be able to practice their skills and change their attitude to become better citizens. For this reason, schools must begin focusing on providing students the skills, attitudes, and knowledge they will need to be successful in the pluralistic and interdependent world in which students will live and work as adults (Diaz-Rico, 2014). When students miss out on social opportunities in a typical classroom they are missing out on opportunities for academic enrichment (collaborating on projects, working in pairs, participating in class discussions) as well as personal and social enrichment (making new friends, playing games). The long-term goals are to continue building relationships over time and having greater social competence. “The earlier we can intervene with these children and teach the necessary social skills, the more likely it is that they will become adjusted and socially competent young adults and adults” (Stephens 2). Adolescence is a critical time in society; it is a developmental period where children have an experimental foundation for developing a variety of social skills. Social disadvantage may be an issue for some of the students in this class, so social inclusion was an important factor for the curriculum plan. These students may experience difficulties from their multicultural background or socio-economic status. Social disadvantage may affect student’s learning with their lack of confidence and ability to understand. Regardless of student’s background or social status, teachers must ensure underprivileged students have equal opportunities and are included in all activities (Ewing, 2013, p. 82).
