What the technology is…..
Flexible display screens have been used in electronics such as television and Sony camera’s but flexible displays screens as smart phone screens have been in the developing stages for the last decade and have only recently been made into prototypes and introduced to the public. These screens are based on a flexible substrate, the substrate being either plastic, metal or a flexible glass, this allows the screens to be lighter, thinner and more durable compared to normal screens found in television, phones and in some camera’s.

What is does
Replacing the screen with a bendable plastic will allow it to be changed into different shapes fitting for the consumer’s hand and cheek area. An example of this is the Samsung Galaxy round, which is currently the only phone which has been developed to fit the flexible OLED screen into it. The phone (shown in the picture) has a curved back and front which allows the consumer to hold it more comfortably. This means it sits more comfortably both against the cheek and in the hand

How or why it can be classed as an emergency technology
One of emerging technologies meanings are technologies that arise from new knowledge or innovation applications of existing knowledge. The flexible OLED (also known as the Organic Light Emitting Diode), screens originally came from the idea of LCD screens in TV, being flexible. The idea also originated from foldable, flexible electronic newspaper this idea of foldable, flexible newspapers where introduced during the early 21st century, in the attempt to replace paper newspapers. However, the developers later found that to make these types of newspapers it will cost more money than just buying a paper copy, abandoning the ideas. But companies like Samsung and LG have gained their ideas from these electronic newspapers and have made it into a screen instead. Through the past
