Former Anti-Apartheid Icon Nelson Mandela Passes Away
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, one of the most significant figures of the twentieth and twenty first centuries has died at the age of 95, in his home in Johannesburg. He passed away in the company of his family ( Beresford 2013). "If cancer wins I will still be the better winner, and when I go to the next world, the first thing I will do is look for an ANC office to renew my membership (Nelson).” Nelson Mandela suffered from vision damage, tuberculosis, and soon prostate cancer that took the life of the freedom fighter (Reuters 2013). In 1993 Nelson Mandela along with President F.W Klerk accepted a Nobel Peace Prize. One year later on April 27, 1994 the era of apartheid ended and Mandela was inaugurated as president of South Africa on May 10 1994. In 1999 Nelson Mandela stepped down from the political spotlight. He remained a global advocate and focused more of his attention to the HIV and AIDS epidemic after losing his son Makgotho to the fatal disease in 2005 (Beresford 2013).
