Negativity in the workplace and the demand of jobs are causing a decline in American work ethic. Work ethic is a set of values that is based on hard work, attitude, and character. The three main causes of negativity in the workplace are people are negative, people are discriminated against, and single parents are trying to raise their child(ren) while working. As negativity in the workplace increases, morale, productivity, and work ethic decrease. When there is negativity in the workplace, customers can be chased away. Negativity not only causes work ethic to decline, but it causes the number of customers to decline. People that come into to work negative can affect everyone else around them. Negative employees affect everyone that they encounter throughout the day. A negative employee is sometimes caused by something temporary in the workplace, such as budget cuts or workload increases. Also, hours can temporarily change because of holidays and the location can change due to disaster or remodeling. All of these examples may cause an inconvenience for an employee and they may react negatively to it. Negativity can also evolve slowly over time without reason. Negativity is contagious and may even affect positive employees. A way for anyone to avoid being negative is to “jump-start” their day and make sure they are being positive. If an employee comes in positive, it can cause everyone around them to be positive. If there is negativity going on in the workplace, it shouldn’t be avoided; it should be fixed. Negativity needs to be addressed so that a way to fix it can be established. Whenever an employee that is usually negative does something positive, praise them. They want to earn money and they don’t want to have to go through obstacles to earn it. They need money to live and raise a family, so a job shouldn’t become an obstacle in their life. Also, no one wants to live a life with a occupation they don't like. Everyone should live how they want to live, live their dreams. To do that, they have to be willing to go through the hardships of life, to fail before they can succeed. No one should have to conform and just settle with something that’s not in their full potential. If you want to do something, something that’s important to you, you have to work for it.

Cynicism at the workplace comes in many different forms and seems to have increased in the last few years in light of mass layoffs, mergers, and corporate scandals (Anderson, 1996). In 1991, Mirvis and Kanter reported that 43% of American workers exhibited highly cynical attitudes toward work. The popularity of the comic strip Dilbert further indicates the prevalence of cynicism in today’s work place (Dean, Brandes, & Dharkwadkar, 1998). A Google search on ‘cynicism at the workplace’ produced 408 000 results, including a segment on NPR from May 2007 dealing with the topic of cynicism. The anchor only half-jokingly remarked that General Motors’ employees had good reason to be cynical in the face of plant closings and the loss of more than 30 000 jobs. The question arises if workplace cynicism has to inevitably follow the decline of American businesses, and if there are any factors that could potentially positively influence cynicism.

Attitude in the work field is something that affects you every day. It reflects who you are as a person and who you are in a group of people. How you decide to be and act is how it is going to affect you. If you go into work with a negative attitude about your job then chances are you are going to find reasons not to do anything or even enjoy it, leading you to be nasty or rude to those around you who enjoy their job and the environment that they are in.
Changing the negatives into positives can be made by changing their perspective, practice self-care, and to consider the consequences of negativity. There are many possible ways to help make this change, but to keep in mind, doing the little things is what counts the most. Doing something as simple as reading a positive quote every morning before leaving for school or work can turn the day around drastically. With changing the outlook of things, come lessons that can be learned early on in life rather than figuring the lesson out itself. Also, once one sees life the way the finally want to see it, with a positive mindset, they can become the person they have wanted to
