The Negative Effects of Television on Children in Society

An estimated one billion television sets have been sold in North America, and on average, children watch 28 hours per week. The effect of television creates negative development in children. Television is one of the biggest contributions to the growing amount of obese children in North America. The amount of glorified violence in today’s society can be attributed to children watching high rated television shows. Many young children are involved in promiscuous behaviour. This might be a result of what they had seen on a television program. A good deal of advertising companies advertise on children’s networks, because children are the easiest targets to be manipulated into their product. Television is not the only contributor to negative development in children but it is a big one. Effects of television will continue to follow children through adulthood. Children can do many other activates that give then the same positive effects of television.

Television is a significant factor in child obesity. “According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, almost one in four children, between seven and 12, is obese.” (Television’s impact on kids) There are two ways that television contributes to child obesity. One of them would be watching television rather than being active. The seconded one is the aggressive marketing of junk food on children’s networks. “According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, most food advertising on children’s networks is for fast foods, candy, and pre-sweetened cereals. Commercials for healthy foods make up only four percent of those shown“. Some beavers are increased fear, desensitization to real-life violence, hummers violence, and aggressive behaviour. Television promotes promiscuous behaviour that children are more likely to fallow as a result of seeing it. Advertisements could be the only thing on television but still children would be exposed to the growing amount of child obesity, glorified valance, and promiscuous beaver. These negative effects can be minimized if parents sat down with their children and watched what they were and discussed the difference of television and real life. Television is a vary big negative effect on child development. These effects can influence the way children will think, learn, and act for the rest of their lives.
