Adolescents in particular are so consumed by social media that simply walking down the street can be a challenge and potentially dangerous because of their need to “be connected”. Nowadays the internet helps us with tasks that we used to only be able to do in person, so the necessity to communicate is becoming obsolete. There are even jobs where you do not have to go to in person interview because you can video chat right from the comfort of your own
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.

We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
While with the constant use of these social technologies, less people are communicating in person, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good because with the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social networks were created for the sole purpose of helping individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but communication is still the number one. It is not only changing how we communicate, but how we interact with each other in daily life. Supporters of social networking sites say that the online communities promote increased interaction with friends and family and offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to educational support and materials.
In the late 90s, while my country, Georgia, was recovering from civil war, the transportation and communication means were almost paralyzed, and most people had to walk several kilometers in order to visit each other and know the latest news. Now, after 16 years, with rapidly developing Internet technologies, young people have at their disposal a variety of different means of communication. Modern teenagers are significantly different from the teenage generation of the past when the world existed without cellphones, computers and social networks, which now have become the primary means of communication. Surveys show that over the past 10 years, social networks have become an integral part of our lives. According to Taylor Thomas, in Top Ten Reviews;
There are many ways social media can be used by youth in a positive way. It is not just an avenue for socializing; kids and adolescents can be creative, interact, and learn (Chau, 2010). Social networking provides an alternative way to get students interested...
As in real life, teenagers are very shy of what is coming out of their mouth, but in social media, it’s the opposite, “Social media is preventing us from standing up for ourselves the way we should be” (Thaiatizickas). Facebook is a convenient way to contact a long distance relative or friends, but teenagers are depending on it too much that make them lacked face to face communication. Social media such as Facebook limits the face to face interaction between humankind. Technology has a huge impact on human life and some may take them as an advantage and disadvantage. Many believed that the digital world is their real life and they can meet and talk to whoever they want through messenger and video calls. Teenagers often say the things that they wanted to say through social media, “they are sending messages and content that they would never share at school, often using language that they would never say to someone’s face, a language that, if used with classmates at school, would lead to disciplinary action” (journal by Steiner-Adair). Compare to the previous generations, the younger generations have the effects on social networking that cause them to grow up differently. Social media are now destroying teenagers’ social skills as well as the future
Technology is something that people all over the world are using to communicate with family members and friends. College students are frequently using different models of communication by using the internet and mobile technology. I am interested in these issues because social media has influenced how students are now communicating more frequently through technology. This has affected how communication is conducted interpersonal and intrapersonal. The problem is there has been a declined in traditional face to face communication and it is frequently changing every year. Why does it matter because society is communicating everyday through social media? Technology has played a big part of our everyday life and is growing rapidly.
