What makes Canadians truly Canadian? Is it based on their background information: age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background or religion? These factors may characterize one’s personality, but this does not classify one as a Canadian citizen. What differentiates between a Canadian or American is based upon their citizenship status. A citizenship status is a country that one is entitled by birth or naturalization (immigration) with privileges, rights and duties (“Benefits of Canadian Citizenship” 1 Apr. 2014). Many people living in Canada do not realize the value and importance of a citizenship. In fact, hundreds of thousands of people are still waiting on a response from immigration Canada. There are many negative impacts of not having a Canadian citizenship in terms of privileges, opportunities and benefits. Firstly, you will lose the privilege of being able to run for or vote in any municipal, provincial and federal election (“Benefits of Canadian Citizenship” 1 Apr. 2014). Secondly, you may not be able to apply for specific social benefits such as pension plans (“Benefits of Canadian Citizenship” 1 Apr. 2014). Finally, you will be at risk of travel security and deportation for crime and mischief within Canada (“Benefits of Canadian Citizenship” 1 Apr. 2014).

Firstly, a major negative impact would be that citizens will not be able to vote or run for any municipal, provincial and federal election without a Canadian citizenship. Voting is the opportunity given to the community to express and choose one’s preferred leader. Members of society that do not have a Canadian citizenship are negatively affecting themselves because they barricade opportunities toward success. Being a Canadian citizen comes with pride and satisfaction, but it also has many practical applications. “The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.”(Miller 16 Apr. 2014).The world is in our fingertips and we make the decisions that effect tomorrow. We have to observe all the negative aspects of common issues across the world. Not having your Canadian citizenship is just another common issue. I strongly agree that having a Canadian citizenship is the key to success, but if you do not have one, it comes along with pins and needles.
