“Automatic”
“There are 6.8 billion people on the planet and 4 billion of them use a mobile phone. Only 3.5 billion of them use a toothbrush” (Zelikman, par. 4). The negative impact of technology on society is the subject of Miranda Lambert’s hit song “Automatic.” An interview conducted by CMT with Lambert shows that she wrote the song in remembrance to the olden days where she believed life was less complicated. Lambert blames this new complication to the innovations made in technology and all the distractions and laziness associated with it. Therefore, when analyzed now, Miranda Lambert’s “Automatic” depicts the negative effect of technology on the world today.

The middle of Lamberts song states, "Doing it all by hand, cause when everything is handed to you It 's all only worth as much as the time you put in"(12-13). Lambert argues that the Internet hands people the information they want without causing them to put any hard work in. In the past society would of had to go the library or a bookstore and personally look for their information in a book instead of having a search engine do all the work for them. According to a study shown in Forbes, The amount of independent bookstores has declined over fifty percent in the last twenty years (par. 6). This decrease is an example that society no longer takes the time to personally put in the manual effort. Lambert also addresses this issue by stating, “"You 'd write it on a piece of paper then you put a stamp on it And they 'd get it three days later"(17-19). With new inventions such as cellphones people decide to send a quick text instead of taking the time to personally write a long letter to a friend. A chart released by the United States Postal Service shows that 212,000,000,000 letters were sent in 2007 as opposed to the 158,000,000,000 letters sent in 2013 (“Pieces of Mail Handled”, fig. 1). In fact, recent studies conducted by the Pew Research Center have shown a large increase in people accessing the news through a digital source ("Technology And Divorce: A Correlation?", par. 6). Also, the average news viewing time has increased fifteen minutes between 2006 and 2010 within people with some post graduate experience (“Following the News”, fig.2). But, seventeen percent of Americans in the study reported that they did not receive any news, which is little to no change from previous years (Following the News, par. 8).
